Mike Gundy Explains Why He Took His Shirt Off at Homecoming and Hoops

Mike Gundy, national treasure. After a crazy Homecoming weekend, Gundy explained this week why he took his shirt off in GIA on Friday evening and Mason Rudolph did the same.

“One thing you lose in college is you miss the high school pep assembly on Fridays,” said Gundy. “That time you spend with your teammates and classmates. When you get to college you just don’t have that feel. On Homecoming here we do. We have the largest Homecoming in the country.”

He also talked about the thousands of people who pour into Stillwater and spill into GIA on Friday evening for Homecoming and Hoops.

“We had a high school coach that I remember at times would do crazy things at pep assemblies, and the players and students loved it. I thought ‘obviously that was a pretty cool deal with it being 30-something years later I still remember those things.’

“I didn’t plan on any of it. I actually thought about (assemblies) about a month ago because I have a kid that’s in high school football now. When I got there the other night and introduced (the players), of course they all go crazy over Mason. He’s fortunate to be a nice looking guy, good player, nice good kid so people like him. They’re all going crazy.

“So I said, ‘You ought to take your shirt off for them.’ He looked at me, and his eyes got this big. That’s just not his nature. He would prefer to be at a lake throwing a football to somebody on a jet ski or something like that. I said, “Hey, they’re all screaming going crazy for you, what’s the big deal, you’re gonna go to the pros next year anyway.’ I couldn’t get him to do it.”

“I said, ‘I tell you what, I’ll take my shirt off if you take your shirt off.’ Then he kind of bought in a little bit. He was still kind of scared. Then when he did it I said, ‘oh heck I got to do it now.'”

“The only bad thing was when I got home of course I got it. Kristen said it made her throw up in her mouth a little bit. Which I understand. They enjoyed it. I bet you could take a poll 20 years from now of some of the people that were there, and the one thing they would tell you was about Mason and I taking our shirt off, and we had a lot of fun. If you can’t have fun doing this, it’s probably not worth it.”

He then went on to talk about “Faceboard for Snapchat” which was an all-timer and that he’s better at social media than he is at coaching. The entire sequence was almost as good as the original incident.

“I just wanted to have fun,” Gundy added. “Mason and I have had a great career here together. Over the last couple of years, he and I have gotten really close in things we do. We’ve had a great relationship.”
