NFL Pokes Including Washington Get New Numbers, Rudolph Sticks With Old No. 2

Mason Rudolph will keep the same jersey number he wore for most of his college career as a Pittsburgh Steeler. James Washington, however, is switching.

The Steelers announced the new jersey numbers for their rookies on Friday, and we learned that Rudolph will continue to sport No. 2. Washington, who wore No. 28 for the entirety of his OSU career, is now set to wear No. 13 at the next level.

It seems second-year corner Mike Hilton is holding down Washington’s 28 jersey.

The switch for Washington is an interesting one, as he’s in pretty elite NFL company with the No. 13 — the most notable of which is Giants All-Pro pass-catcher Odell Beckham Jr. ?

Don Maynard, a five-time AFL All-Star receiver who was Joe Namath’s favorite target back in the day, also wore No. 13.

As for Rudolph, the No. 2 is equally as elite. MVP-winning QB Matt Ryan dons the same jersey number as the Steelers rookie, and the same digits worked out well for David Akers, albeit at a vastly different position.

It will be weird seeing Washington streak down the sidelines in No. 13, but I think it’s a sight we can all get used to pretty quickly.

Washington’s teammate on the opposite side of the offense, Marcell Ateman, is changing his number from 3 to 11 with the Raiders. Quarterback EJ Manuel wears No. 3 for Oakland. Although they aren’t similar in stature, Julian Edelman is a successful receiver with the double 1s, and Julio Jones is one of the game’s elite receivers.

Finally, safety Tre Flowers is donning No. 37 in Seattle, moving six numbers up. All-Pro safety Kam Chancellor is currently wearing 31, so Flowers might never get the opportunity to wear his old number, especially when you consider it’s likely they retire Chancellor’s number at some point.
