No Quarterback Update at Mike Gundy’s First Media Luncheon
‘Both of them are competitive, both of them are learning, both of them are grinders.’
STILLWATER — If Mike Gundy knows what quarterback he’s going to trot out for the opening snap of the 2025 season, he is keeping it close to the vest.
In the opening statement of his first media luncheon news conference, Gundy noted that he didn’t have any roster updates to share, which included the quarterback competition between Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny. The Cowboys start their season next Thursday against UT-Martin.
“I don’t have any updates on that,” said Gundy of his expectations about how the QBs would be used in the opener.
Gundy said he expects about 27 guys to play in the opener who haven’t played at OSU, a category both quarterbacks fall into with Hejny transferring in this offseason from TCU and Flores having not taken a snap in his first two seasons with the program.
“Both of them are competitive, both of them are learning, both of them are grinders,” said Gundy about what’s stood out about the QBs. “They’re athletic. The same things as a few weeks ago — that part hasn’t changed. Their attitudes been really good and their ability to relate to with their coach has been well in my opinion.”
Need a refresher on the two guys vying for the Cowboys’ starting roll? Here’s a little bit about each.
Flores
Height:Â 6-foot-3
Weight:Â 215
Class:Â Redshirt Freshman
Hometown: Gretna, Nebraska
Flores signed with the Cowboys in the 2023 recruiting class, picking the Pokes over offers from Kansas State, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Washington and others.
He led the Gretna Dragons to a state title as a senior, throwing for 414 yards and three touchdowns in the title game. He finished that year with 3,117 passing yards, 31 pashing touchdowns and 10 rushing scores.
He hasn’t played in his two years at Oklahoma State. He more than likely would have last season as the Cowboys’ quarterback room turned into a quarterback carousel, but a lower body injury ended his year. He received a medical hardship to get that year back, meaning he still has four years to play.
Hejny
Height:Â 6-foot
Weight:Â 206
Class:Â Redshirt Freshman
Hometown: Aledo, Texas
A four-star recruit in the 2024 class, Hejny is a dual-threat QB who chose TCU, the team he grew up supporting, over offers from OSU, Nebraska, Baylor, Ole Miss, Utah and others.
He led Aledo to back-to-back Texas state championships as a junior and senior. His senior year saw Hejny throw for nearly 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns while running for 1,041 yards and 13 scores.
He redshirted at TCU last season but used his four allotted games while doing so. He didn’t throw any passes in that time on the field but did rush 15 times for 65 yards before transferring to OSU this offseason.
