North Texas Safety Transfer Quinton Hammonds Commits to Oklahoma State
OSU lands a North Texas safety who had a similar path to Drew Mestemaker.
The floodgates might be opening now as a third North Texas player has pledged to rejoin Eric Morris in Stillwater.
Not long after running back Caleb Hawkins announced his commitment to the Pokes, news broke that North Texas safety Quinton Hammonds also committed.
Hammonds made 10 starts as a true sophomore for the Mean Green in 2025, finishing the year with 53 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions, three PBUs and a forced fumble.
Hammonds showed this season to be a sure tackler, as well. His 9% miss percentage tied for the best mark in the American this year among qualifying safeties. He also allowed just 24 catches on 42 targets. That 57% catches percentage was tied for sixth among American Conference safeties.
Listed at 6-foot-1, 219 pounds, Hammonds hails from Allen, Texas. He played in all 13 of UNT’s games as a true freshman in 2024, finishing that season with 52 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, an INT and a pass breakup.
Similar to quarterback Drew Mestemaker, Hammonds initially walked on under Morris. He was an unranked prospect in the 2024 class who played receiver at Allen High School, finishing his senior season with 700 all-purpose yards. But the North Texas (and now OSU staff) found immediate value in him.
The Cowboys need additions at essentially every position, but the portal had hit the Cowboys’ safeties room particularly hard, with six OSU safeties announcing intentions to hit the portal. So, getting a bonafide starter with familiarity with defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity’s system should be a big boon for the Pokes.
Hammonds also marks the Cowboys’ first defensive commitment in general, after adding Mestemaker, Hawkins, punter Lachie Pozzobon and long snapper Nolan Akins.
