Notebook: Oklahoma State-Texas

I’m honestly still reeling. I emptied my 10 thoughts earlier but I have about 100 more to get to in the notebook tonight. Here’s everything I wrote down during the game that didn’t make my earlier post.

• The Texas crowd made our Greek students look like Green Bay Packer fans.

• I loved this play from Jordan Sterns.

• You know, it’s not enough that Syracuse has made us all miss the start of 102ish Big 12 Big Monday games in the last 15 years, it has to disrupt our football too.

• Random, but Kevin Harvick likes our lids.

• OSU’s first quarter pace and plays were unbelievable. Like somebody showed them tape of that 2011 team on the plane ride down. Somebody on Twitter joked that OSU should keep Mike Yurcich’s headset switched to off. I thought that was pretty good.

• When your kids disobey you on purpose in public.

• Speaking of headsets … how funny was it that OSU’s headsets weren’t working and yet Mike Gundy continued to wear his? OKC Dave thinks he was listening to Fresh Air. He strikes me as more of a Wait, Wait guy.

• Temperature on the field was 128 degrees. Glenn Spencer was in a long-sleeve jacket. When you’re that cold, you just don’t sweat, man.

• Let’s just say if this was Mason Rudolph to Brandon Sheperd, I would not have been pleased.

• I wrote in the first half, “if all Texas does is run Heard, that’s not going to work. He’s not VY.” It didn’t and he wasn’t. But it almost did work. They weren’t even pretending to pass in the first half. They were in the J.W. Walsh “LOL, you think I’m going to throw this” offense on every play. Every single one!

They were running the love child of the Vince Young offense and the Mike Yurcich bubble screen offense. And I don’t mean that as a compliment.

• “Nah.” -Not Jalen McCleskey

This was unfathomably bad.

• Not sure about anybody else, but one thing the offense does very well that I love is use the Cowboy Backs. It’s nearly impossible to count, but it feels like Rudolph uses them as a safety pretty often on second and third down passes when everybody else is covered up. They’re being used correctly.

• Saturday was intriguing in that it was really the first time OSU had been punched in the mouth since maybe the OU game. Maybe not even then. Maybe more like the Baylor game last season. Its response wasn’t amazing, but it was enough to get to 4-0.

• I really thought OSU could have gone, ostensibly, for the dagger when it was up 24-20 and Seth Jacobs made his pick near midfield. Throw up seven more there and you’re putting distance between yourself and a struggling Horns O. Alas, OSU ran three plays for -7 yards.

• Yes.

• How great was Rudolph trying to argue his intentional grounding? There was nobody within 35 yards of that thing. Clint Chelf approves.

• One more thing on Rudolph, how about we don’t try and throw it away to the long side of the field? Pretty much only bad things can happen.

• Random, but Central Michigan didn’t get murdered by Michigan State.

• Even more random: J.W. Walsh, Mason Rudolph, Daxx Garman and Wes Lunt all threw TD passes on Saturday. (via Colby Daniels)

• It ended like that as well.

• So Chris Carson was “able to go if possible” according to ESPN’s announcing crew. What on earth does that mean?

• I wrote “if we win this …” and “if we cover this …” in my notes about 10 times each.

• How did Walsh get this fumble back??

• Another fine announcing moment: “Walsh is back in. He CAN throw, you know.” Well I would hope so given the fact that he’s playing QB.

• We gonna talk about how Texas sort of disrespected OSU’s offense (not that I blame them) with five minutes left. They were in straight “give it to Gray and punt it back” mode early on in the fourth. What they didn’t plan on was 100 more yards of penalties …

But yeah, it made me miss Dana. Even more so after I watched WVU convert a fake punt up 38-0 in the fourth.

• Yes, it did.

• I was glad Texas was on offense at the end when it was tied 27-27 instead of us. What does that say about me? What does that say about this team.

• How much did ESPN and FOX pay for those contracts again?!

• We should talk about the very end of the game. OSU got a false start called with 13 seconds left. After the penalty, however, the clock read 0:10 for some reason. The announcers freaked out saying that Texas could run 10 seconds off the clock if OSU didn’t have any timeouts (which it did). This is true. Texas could have. But there still should have been 13 seconds left on the clock after the false start. Can you imagine what would have happened if this had played out in Texas’ favor?

• This probably made me laugh harder than anything else all day.
