Notebook: Oklahoma State-Tulsa
Five thoughts are here. I’m going to keep things shorter this basketball season.
• I didn’t know this was Davon Dillard’s first game. That’s probably bad, right? He sure looks the part. No idea if he’s good or not. Big 12 play will be telling.
• Clip looks pretty different with his hair cut short (this was one of my first notes, by the way, if that tells you how the game was going).
• I believe Travis Ford said this, but Chris Olivier is just Marshall Moses with fewer tattoos and less spin on his interior shots. He’s a pretty good scorer down low. I guess.
• I couldn’t get this game on any channel here in Dallas (VCU-Middle Tennessee St. was on two!) so I found it, uh, illegally online. As Amilian astutely pointed out, I broke the law to watch Travis Ford coach a basketball game. Joke’s on me.
• Frank Haith at Tulsa … still the weirdest. The U —> Mizzou —> Tulsa. Wild. Also, the Tulsa head coach makes almost $2M a year?! #AmateurAthletics
• This was nice.

• I did not realize Jordan Woodard’s brother played at Tulsa. Of course, there aren’t many things about college hoops I have realized yet.
• The game felt faster (per the NCAA’s intentions). I’m not sure if it actually was. I told Nolan, Quade and Amilian last week that the best thing college basketball could do is give coaches one timeout a half.
• Nobody draws or dishes out more contact in the paint than Solomon. I have no idea if this is a good thing, but it feels like it’s going to be an important thing throughout the year.
• College basketball has a big time “well Steph is on and he has 40 through three quarters and it’s really easy to watch NBA games because they are distributed everywhere” problem. That hasn’t always been the case and it’s separate from the “Thunder play in OKC” problem.
• Hah, this was so bad. Take him out on a date first, Jawun!

• All the thumbs ups for the color on color matchup. I love it.
• OSU is now 409-51 all time in GIA in non-conference games. Ever.
• Yikes, this is not pretty.

• Tulsa big men both got four fouls with nine minutes left and OSU got steamrolled the rest of the way. That’s what happens when you start Mitch Solomon and Anthony Allen. I like those dudes, but they aren’t starters on a good team.
• I like the 30-second shot clock. I’d like it better if it was 25 seconds.
• Oklahoma State had previously won 196 of its last 201 home non-conference games.
