Notebook: Pair of Double-Digit Runs From Pokes Buries Kansas in GIA

I posted my five thoughts earlier tonight, but it’s time to empty the notebook. Here’s everything I wrote down during (and after) Oklahoma State’s 82-64 win over KU.

• Oklahoma State beat one Big 12 team by double digits this year. One! And it was the Big 12 champs in the last game of the year. For fun, here’s a look at the point differentials from worst to best.

Opponent Outcome
Oklahoma -20
Texas Christian -20
Baylor -16
Texas Christian -13
Baylor -11
Kansas State -10
West Virginia -6
Texas Tech -5
Kansas State -4
Texas -1
Texas 1
Oklahoma 2
West Virginia 3
Kansas 5
Texas Tech 8
Iowa State 9
Iowa State 9
Kansas 18

• OSU went on two double-digit runs. The first one was a 13-0 run in the first half. The second was a 10-0 run in the second half. Solomon and Smith had 5 points each in the first one. Shine had 5 in the second one. The first opened up the game. The second ended it.

• Kansas turned it over on 27 percent of their possessions in the first half. It felt more like 47.

• I was impressed with the way Smith kept the pedal down at the end of the first half. He scored the last 3 points and 5 of the last 13. He was relentless, too. A gear nobody on KU wanted to have on Saturday.

• Fran Fraschilla on Smith: “What is important is that when the offense breaks down, this guy can go get a shot.”

• It sounded like there were a lot of KU fans there. Boynton noted that OSU’s fans were much louder, though.

• A question on this stat OSU always sends out: OSU has made at least one three-pointer in 579 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 13, 2001, which is the 24th longest current streak in college basketball. Will that ever stop? OSU takes, like, 22 3-pointers a game. They going to go 0-for-22?

• Why hasn’t Dizzy been wearing the neon shoes all year?

• Self is 436-88 (83 percent) outside of GIA as the Kansas coach and 4-7 (36 percent) in it.

• This is literally the most Gundy thing of all time.

• I thought the Kendall Smith corner 3 with 12 minutes left was huge. KU cut it to single digits for all of 17 seconds. Smith ended that nonsense with that 3. Also the Lindy rainbow with 6 minutes left that was game, blouses. Made me weak!

• Boynton and Fran noted that folks from Brooklyn fold their pizza to eat it. I can’t begin to express how ridiculous this is. And Boynton talked about his silly eating pizza with a fork is! (I eat pizza with a fork).

• Yes!

• Sima was tremendous offensively — 3 for 3 with (probably) three right-handed jump hooks.

• I’m dying.

• I thought OSU protected the rim really well. Kansas had 34 points in the paint, but OSU had 8 blocks.

• OSU scored 1.21 points per possession on Saturday. They averaged 1.26 PPP last year. Averaged!

KU started second half 3-4 and trailed by 15. That was a good sign.

• !!!!!

• Dave rolls deep.

• It felt over to me on Clip baseline dunk to make it 50-36.

• Smith has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 12 games, six of those were 20-point performances.

• Kansas hasn’t been swept in a regular season home-and-away series since Iowa State beat them in Ames and Lawrence in 2001. The last time Oklahoma State swept the Jayhawks in such a season was all the way back in 1983.
