Notebook: Pokes Hit Most 3-Pointers in a Game Since November

Published

on

I posted my five thoughts here and did a postgame show with Carson following Oklahoma State’s massive 84-79 win over Kansas on Saturday. But it’s time to empty the notebook. Here is everything I wrote down during and after the Pokes’ win in Lawrence.

• Kansas wore their best throwbacks (and that’s saying something). The ones Carson and I discussed on the podcast on Thursday. They have a lot of great old-time looks, but the block Kansas with the racing blocks down the shorts is as good as it gets.

• Is it just me, or does Jeffrey Carroll force a lot of shots? I get that he feels the weight of trying to be the best player on a Tournament team, but the shot selection is not always great.

• Lol!

• I can’t believe I’m typing this, but it felt like OSU got some calls in the first half. Maybe I’m grading on a curve because we all know what to expect at Allen Fieldhouse, but I raised my eyebrows a few times at whistles that went the Pokes’ way.

• This is so impressive.

• Related: Which of these is funnier? The fact that it took Kansas like four fouls at the end of the game to get OSU into the bonus or the fact that Kansas fans don’t understand exactly why this is funny? KU hoops fans are OU football fans.

• Mr Naismith, undoubtedly distributing some digital takes.

• OSU’s starters played 88 of a possible 100 minutes in the second half. McGriff and Carroll didn’t come out. Waters and Smith sat for five minutes. Solomon sat the final two minutes only because he fouled out. Boynton rode his horses, and they delivered.

• Yo.

• OSU had 20 (!) points off of just 11 KU turnovers. That seems nearly impossible to accomplish. Possibly related: OSU’s 12 made 3-pointers are the most they’ve hit in a game since they hit 13 against ORU in November.

• Mitchell Solomon is fourth all-time at OSU in offensive rebounds.

• Carroll is 11th all-time in 3-pointers made.

• I’ll admit it, I wanted OSU to go into the four corners offense for the final 15 minutes of the game. When KU cut it to 52-45, I legitimately thought the final was going to be something like 88-69.

• Apropos of nothing, this tweet was amazing.

• CBS played the Joey Graham lob against Texas in 2004 when OSU won the Big 12 title in GIA. Carson and I reminisced about this on Thursday, and then they showed it!

• OSU’s 46 in the first half tied the most they’ve scored in a first half in B12 play.

• I think it does.

• OSU’s lead was 13 at half. Their lead was 11 with 10 min left. That’s where the game was won. In not letting that thing evaporate over the first 10 minutes of the second half.

• Yes!

• I still can’t get over that KU shot 47 percent from the field, only turned it over 11 times and took more free throws than OSU, and they only led for 1:55. How is that even possible?

• It’s impossible to earmark every big play down the stretch, but this one where Smith put OSU up 9 with eight minutes to play was pretty massive. He hit more big shots in that second half than most guys hit in a career.

• McGriff was 7 for 10 from the field, and he was within about .3 seconds from being 8 for 11 on this ridiculous 3-pointer. Alas. How cool is this shot, by the way? The light seeping in at the top of the Fieldhouse with Boynton trying to get his first road win. Whoooo boy, Saturday rocked.

• Both my son and daughter pointed out how ridiculous it is that the Jayhawk wears shoes. They were flabbergasted. Why is that bird wearing shoes?! I can honestly say I’ve never even noticed it.

• I legit thought Kansas might shoot 30 free throws in the final five minutes.

• This was awesome.

• OSU led Kansas at Kansas (KANSAS AT KANSAS!) for all but 1:55 of the game. An absolute thumping in AFH. Unbelievable.

• Wow.

• Haha!

• Related: OSU has only led two Big 12 games at the end of regulation. They led Texas by 1. They led Kansas by 5. Every other game has ended in a tie or a deficit at the end of regulation.

• How about that offensive board Dizzy had?

• Oh baby.

• It felt like KU could get to the rim when they wanted, especially with Azubuike. That obviously wasn’t true, but it felt that way at times. I thought Solomon did about as good of a job as you can do on him in that environment (and yes, I realize he was 8 for 11 with 21 points in 20 minutes).

• Now THAT’s some crootin!
