Notebook: Rudolph, Washington Set OSU Records in Camping World Bowl Win

Published

on

Oklahoma State wasn’t impressive on Thursday in the Camping World Bowl, but a heavy dosage of Rudolph to Washington coupled with Justice Hill doing his thing and the defense forcing two turnovers was just enough to seal a 30-21 win.

Let’s get into some leftover notes from the game.

• Going for a FG on 4th and 1 in the red zone was … not how I expected to kick off the Camping World Bowl. Feel like it set the tone early on what to expect from OSU from an aggression standpoint.

• Virginia Tech’s offense is only slightly worse than OSU’s defense, I think. But man, the defensive unit leaves a lot to be desired.

•  Late half clock management: Still not great!

• Both starting corners — Rodarius Williams and AJ Green — shaken up at different points in the game. Brutal night injury-wise that pushed Jerel Morrow and Ramon Richards to corner.

• If you wanted to play a drinking game for this bowl, you’d be plenty buzzed by halftime if you drank at every mention of “lunch pail defense.”

• Virginia Tech’s game plan of ‘hey, let’s just play keepaway’ dadgum nearly worked. If not for two costly turnovers by the Hokies, this one may have ended differently.

• Rudolph passed Brandon Weeden for most yards passing in a single season with his 351 on the night. Meanwhile Rudolph’s top target, James Washington, set an OSU record of his own by passing Rashaun Woods on OSU’s all-time receiving yards list. Washington has 4,472 — Rashaun’s was 4,414. It’s the second most in Big 12 history.

• Justice Hill’s 1,467 rushing yards this season is 13th most in a single season in OSU history. Washington’s 1,549 yards ranks as the third most in a single season by an OSU receiver in school history.

• This is insane.

• Malcolm Rodgriguez is a dude. Which is good, because, uh, he might be a starter next year.

• Not exactly breaking news, but Justice Hill is Heisman good. I saw a fellow CBS Sports writer tweet Thursday that he has Hill as the No. 1 ranked RB in his 2019 draft class. There’s a real chance he could be a Heisman contender (frontrunner) next season. HEI5MAN! (Please credit Kyle Boone for future Justice Hill Heisman references…)

• OSU has three-straight 10-win seasons to mark the longest streak in school history, per OSU’s game notes. Only OSU, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, San Diego State, Wisconsin and Stanford (with an Alamo Bowl win) can claim 10-wins in each of the past three seasons.

• I would like to please reserve Calvin Bundage as OSU’s permanent linebacker for infinity more seasons. So much fun.

• This season will be seen as a disappointment, but 10 wins ain’t nothing to scoff at any year.

•I, for one, am very interested/intrigued to see what OSU’s offense will look like next season. Spencer Sanders at the helm, Justice, J.D. and Chuba in the backfield, C.J. Moore, Tyron Johnson, Pat McKaufman, Dillon Stoner at wide-out. Consider me excited.

Feels!
