Notes on Mike Gundy’s Missouri State Press Conference

The head ball coach talks QBs, defense and his stable of RBs after Game 1.

Mike Gundy seemed neither super pleased nor super displeased with OSU’s 58-17 victory over Missouri State on Thursday evening. He said the word “ave-ruge” about 32 times about pretty much everything but this site and was asked about the quarterback play quite a bit.

Gundy also mentioned OSU’s wealth of running backs, his speed on defense off the edge and why he’s so jacked up about OSU’s kickoff game. Here are some notes on the presser with the full video at the bottom.

• Opened saying “we played good at times, we played sloppy at times.” Yep. By the way, the mullet hasn’t been trimmed.

• Noted that O-line and Taylor Cornelius were “average at best.” I concur. Turned the ball over too much. Also concur.

• Too many penalty yards but “good to get started, get out there, get a feel for where we’re at.”

• Corndog missed too many throws. Said there were six that he normally hits. Thought mentally he was pretty good. “He’ll be fine.”

• Keondre played well, ran well, made a couple throws. “He did a nice job of taking care of the football and pulling it down and running when he needed to.”

• On why Dru Brown and Spencer Sanders didn’t play: “It’s a complicated process. It would take a while to explain it. We felt at that time it was best to go with Wudtee.” It’s actually not that complicated, and I appreciate Gundy doing what he did.

• Said he was pretty certain that 14 would have some jitters and be a little jumpy but that everyone needs to be patient with him. “He should get better.”

• “All the backs were really good. It’s safe to say that (Chuba) and 7 are fast.” Likes where the RBs are at as a group and what they bring to the team as a package.

• Reiterated that he’d like Justice to get 15 carries a game. Said it was good to get LD and Chuba some work.

• “I’m fired up about the kicker. It’s nice to have somebody who’s booting it in the end zone. He’s fairly consistent.”

• He has confidence in the return game with Landon Wolf, Tylan Wallace and Dillon Stoner.

• “Got out of his gap” might be the new “got out of his world.” He said it multiple times about players on OSU’s defense.

• Said he “would agree” with the fact that OSU has the most speed they’ve ever had off the snap with Bundage and Brailford coming off the edge. “Lets Calvin play to his strength. We need to give him an opportunity to go after the quarterback.”

• Apparently when Knowles saw Bundage he was like, yeahhhh I want him going after the QB. Same!

• QB situation is going to be different every week.

• Said Cornball was trying to aim it instead of “just cutting it loose.” Was tentative because he was the starter. Doesn’t surprise or concern Gundy. “He’ll be fine.”

• Said Cornelius gives them a running dimension they didn’t have with Mason. “If he takes off he can roll pretty good.”

• Would be “shocked” if Tanner McCalister and (somebody else whose name I couldn’t hear) weren’t back practicing next week.

• Might try to dove hunt a little this weekend. Concerned about it being too green.
