Notes on Mike Gundy’s Post-Kansas State Press Conference

I know it didn’t inspire a ton of confidence, but I wanted to work back through the press conference Mike Gundy held after his team got shellacked in Manhattan on Saturday afternoon. Here are my notes and thoughts.

• “They made better adjustments than we did at halftime.” Said OSU got down a couple scores, got pushed around and couldn’t defend the run very well.

• “We defended the deep ball much better.” Well … yeah.

• Protection could have been the best it’s been all year. Ran the ball ok but couldn’t throw it very well. Said OSU is handicapped when down two scores because everyone knows they’re going to throw it.

• Special teams: Avruj.

• Said it came down to getting pushed around. Their QB did a nice job of scrambling.

• Got a couple of “let ’em off the hook” statements. I wanted him to go full Dennis Green!

• Bye week is a good time. Need to regroup a little bit. Coaching stuff is going to look at what they’ve done and where there are scheme mistakes.

• The penalty on Tylan was “a terrible call.” Can’t say anything to 2 on that. He’s working hard. Penalties weren’t undisciplined, just got pushed around at times.

• Didn’t think they got pushed around because of effort. Wait, is that worse than it actually being effort? Got “worn down” up front in the second half.

• Percentages on fourth and 9 or fourth and 10 are really low and if you miss you’re out of the game. Said they punted because it gave them a chance to get a stop and still win.

• “It’s not alarming at all.” That’s what Gundy said of the loss. Been the same way for 14 years. “If we were to ever start to get alarmed, that would make it a lot worse.”

• Gundy shut down the follow up to this question.

• “We can’t panic. Can’t do that.” Have to look at what they’re doing, where they’re at, what mistakes were made. “We’re certainly aware of the situation … we know what’s going on.”

• Approach hasn’t changed for years.

• “I think the effort is good. I think they’re giving us good effort.” Look and see where they can change some things up. I’ve got one suggestion.

• Said all the losses are the same and he doesn’t worry about losing the team. Part of it is growing up. Thinks they’re discouraged and is glad that they’re discouraged. “You put your big boy pants on, find out where you have issues, correct them and move on to the next week.”

• Didn’t think OSU threw it well. Asked Mark Cooper what he thought. Cooper: “That’s probably right.”

• Said the receivers were open in a lot of instances … “so they’re good plays.”

• Gundy says he helps shepherd by being honest with people. Said he has to remain calm and have composure for the organization.

Not considering a QB change.

• “We’re not a very tough football team inside the 3-yard-line. We have to improve at that.” Said OSU has struggled with this for the last 5-7 years. Has to work to try and be a more physical and tougher football team without rocking the boat.
