Oklahoma State-TCU Notebook: Gundy Hit In Head, Trill Unimpressive

Published

We already looked at my 10 Thoughts, the amazing OSU defensive performance and had a postgame show. Now it’s time to empty the notebook on a great 31-6 Oklahoma State win over TCU.

• Mason Rudolph is 15-0 as a starter against Big 12 teams not named Baylor. He’s 0-3 against Baylor. I have no idea what to do with this information.

• Yes it was.

• As well as Chris Carson as running it right now, I feel OK saying this: I don’t ever want to see Carson pass a football ever again.

• Mike Gundy is 4-1 against Gary Patterson and TCU. That’s pretty good.

• Rudolph’s checking down has really gotten throughout the season. It was one of his greatest strengths last year before he swooned earlier in the season. Now it feels like that portion of his game is always there even when he has off days (like Saturday).

• Maybe my favorite part of the game.

• I had no issues on going for it on 4th down on the first drive. You were at the max of Ben Grogan’s range (45-50 yards) and it was fourth and three. I’m fine with that. I think teams should actually do it more often.

• Crazy.

• Kenny Hill should run it 55 times a game with the way he passes. I was incredibly impressed with TCU’s offense when they got him into space. I was incredibly not impressed with TCU’s offense when they let him throw it.

• That was Gary Patterson 200th game. It was the first time since 2000 his team has been gashed for 7+ yards per carry.

• Dawg.

• I wrote this early in the game: Is this the day the close games catch up with us? Nope!

• Nobody wants to talk about it, but Barry Sanders has been, uh, average all year. He’s averaging 15.5 yards on six punt returns and 21.6 on 12 kick returns. Those numbers are fine, but the real reason he’s back there is because Gundy trusts him. Now he’s muffed two punts in crucial Big 12 games late in the season. Fumbling punt returners to Gundy are like disruptive North Koreans to Kim Jong Un — we might never see No. 26 again.

• Insane numbers here.

• All five of Justice Hill’s 100-yard games have come in Big 12 Conference play. Is that good?

• I do think the offensive line deserves as much credit as Chris Carson and Justice Hill do for the incredible OSU rushing performance over the last half of the season. Holes so wide Gundy could drive his tractor through them.

• TCU is not consistent on offense. With that offense, you have to have a more consistent QB. This is why Gundy talks about the importance of elite QB play in the Big 12.

• Uni Heismannnn! I love the untucked shirt/towel hanging out the book. No wristbands is also a very clean look. Tough to beat the number one as well.

• The line in Vegas moved from TCU -3 to TCU -6 right before the game started. Oops.

• The game plan early on seemed odd to me, although I know what OSU was going for. The running game seemed to be working, but Rudolph kept tossing bombs. He was picking on poor No. 12 (a true freshman CB for TCU), but he was off and it showed. Yurcich flipped it in the second half, and OSU threw just 11 passes to 25 runs. Boom goes the dynamite.

• True. Freshman.

• Both teams played the first half like they saw that there were four Big 10 teams ranked in the top eight of the CFB Playoff rankings last week.

• One of my favorite equipment subtleties? The paisley print on the neck and back bottom of the helmet. I think this is tremendous.

• Rudolph does great job getting rid of it before getting sacked more often than we probably give him credit for.

• It’s easy to say retrospectively that OSU should not have gone for it on fourth and inches at the end of the first half because of how the game turned out, but I thought they should have in the moment. The defense was clearly locked in and you would have had TCU pinned deep in their own territory. Of course I also thought it would take more than seven points to win this game.

• Neither team was at 90 yards passing at halftime. What is life?

• OSU’s first goal line stand (at the end of the first half) started on its own seven-yard-line. So impressive. Also, seems to be an annual ritual for OSU against TCU.

• J DUUUUUUUUB!

• Tralund Webber and The Blizzard (DQ Osborne) have been great for OSU. They don’t get enough credit. No defensive tackles really do (other than VT), but TCU ran it for just 3.7 yards per carry when they came in averaging 5.4. This is largely because of the big fellas up front.

• Two phrases that Tim Brando uses that I love: “quicker than a hiccup” and “he’s a speed merchant.”

• Still LOLing at this one.

• Raise your hand if you’re glad we got a day game in Ft. Worth that nobody seemed excited to be at.

• It was clear Patterson didn’t trust Kenny Trill in the red zone. I mean, part of me gets it becaue I wouldn’t trust Kenny T. to successfully pass me a hoagie at Texas Roadhouse, but this is your dude. He’s one of the best runners on your team! What are you doing?!

• How fun was it to get the jugular early in the fourth instead of weeping on the floor for an hour at the end?

• Have a day, Chris Lacy!

• One last time — OSU’s defense won the game in the first half. It was what we always wanted. A great first-half performance followed by halftime adjustments that made them look even better.

On to Bedlam.
