Oklahoma State up to 40/1 Odds at National Title

Yes, it’s September 5th. Yes, Oklahoma State just housed Southeastern Louisiana 61-7, the same team that lost 16-2 to Incarnate Word last year. But the Cowboys, 80-1 odds to win the national title in college football this season just last week, are up to 40-1 odds according to Westgate Superbook after just one game. This 40-1 number is the same as TCU and Iowa.

The opening game against Southeastern Louisiana probably didn’t do too much by itself to move these odds that much, but several other top 25 teams went down on the opening weekend, including No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 5 LSU, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 16 UCLA, No. 22 North Carolina and No. 11 Ole Miss. It’s a long season, and each of the teams listed above can probably still make the playoff, but even one loss can put a huge dent into any team’s chances — for example, Oklahoma opened at 7/1 odds to win the National Title, saw their odds fall to 20/1 after their loss to Houston.

But Oklahoma State did exactly what they needed to on Saturday — win, and win big. Checking back on the Cowboys odds in October will be much more telling after a trip to Waco to play a still-explosive Baylor team and then a suddenly dangerous Texas coming off an impressive victory over Notre Dame on Sunday. For now, put Gundy and the Pokes are 40-1 to win it all, as they look ahead to Central Michigan this Saturday.
