TRANSFER PORTAL TRACKER

The transfer portal waters had been rather calm over recent weeks for the Cowboys, but they suffered an unfortunate loss on Tuesday.

Redshirt freshman corner D.J. McKinney entered the portal, according to On3. McKinney played in all 14 of Oklahoma State’s games in 2023, starting OSU’s Texas Bowl win against Texas A&M. On the year, he had 38 total tackles and five pass breakups.

Out of Colleyville, Texas, McKinney was a three-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, initially choosing OSU over offers from Missouri, Arkansas, Arizona, Baylor, Kansas State and others. McKinney played in four games as a true freshman in 2022, maintaining his redshirt. He had two tackles as a true freshman.

Listed at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, McKinney showed a ton of promise this past season, playing a role in a deep corner room alongside Korie Black, Cam Smith and Kale Smith. According to PFF, McKinney was targeted 49 times this past season, where he allowed just 22 catches for 446 yards. His season PFF coverage rating of 70.2 ranked second among OSU DBs with at least five coverage snaps, trailing only Black’s 76.5.

McKinney becomes the third OSU defensive back to enter the portal, joining safeties Lardarius Webb Jr. and Nick Session. The Cowboys have also landed a safety out of the portal — UTEP transfer Kobe Hylton.
