Oklahoma State Hoops Scrimmaged Colorado in Boulder, Underwood Wants Adversity

While the Cowboys football team was pulling off a stunning comeback victory in Manhattan over K-State, Brad Underwood and the Cowboys basketball team played a closed-door scrimmage against the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder on Saturday.

The Buffaloes were a solid 22-10 last year, including a 10-8 record in the Pac-12 and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament- eventually losing in the first round to the UConn Huskies. They return four seniors and look to be a tournament team once again this year, so the Cowboys played some very good competition that doesn’t show in the overall record for this year.

I think these kinds of scrimmages against Power 5 schools are absolutely fantastic, and make both teams better, especially in November as we prepare to start the season. Underwood touched on the experience.

“We had a good stretch in the first half, and I tried on purpose to cause some stress on our team to learn to handle adversity, and learn to handle it on the road,” said Underwood. “Because there’s not 10,000 in the arena, and that’s coming for us.

“So I was proud of our guys, who fought through some things, they competed very hard, and then we had a freshman in BA (Brandon Averette) make two tremendous defensive plays late that you have to make.

“Mitch had a huge, grown man rebound, and being on the road has it challenges. It always has its adversity and that’s what today was about for us — it was a growing process.”

Love it. Underwood understands the mental toughness that this team needs to embrace if they want to be a tournament team, and is taking steps even now to build that quality in them. Watch the highlights and listen to Coach talk about the scrimmage here below.
