One of the premier high school folkstyle wrestling events took place in North Carolina this weekend, and a future Cowboy stood atop the podium at the end of it.
Oklahoma State Class of 2027 commit Tanner Hodgins won a Super 32 title at 190 pounds, winning seven matches to get his title belt.
Hodgins stormed his way through the early portions of his bracket, securing tech falls in his first three matches. He outscored those foes a combined 58-11, needing just 9:52 to do so.
From there, Hodgins took out Army commit Casey Liess in the Round of 16, Wyoming commit Braeden Simoneaux in the quarterfinals, Mason Savidan in the semis and Mario Hutcherson in the finals.
Hodgins won the finals bout 5-4, with both guys securing takedowns in the first period. Hodgins did a good job throughout the tournament of finishing periods on top, which ended up being the difference in this one. He scored his takedown late in the frame and was able to hold Hutcherson down to the whistle before the two traded escape points in the final two periods.
Out of New Jersey, Hodgins is a former U17 world bronze medalist. Flo last updated its Class of 2027 big board at the start of July, which listed Hodgins as the No. 43 overall recruit in the class, putting him fourth among 215-pound prospects (though he wrestled at 190 at Super 32). Hodgins took eighth at the U20 U.S. Open at 92 kg in April.
But Hodgins wasn’t the only future Cowboy wrestling at Super 32 this past weekend.
Ladd Holman took second in the 215-pound bracket, while recent commit Gage Lohr took seventh at 157 pounds.
After pinning his first opponent, Holman rattled off three straight tech falls to make the semifinals. In those first four bouts, Holman outscored his opponents a combined 50-1.
In the semis, he majored 3 seed Peter Mocco 10-1 but fell to top seed Maximus Konopka (Virginia Tech commit) 5-0 in the final.
Lohr was the 11 seed in the 157-pound bracket. He won his first two matches via major decision before beating 22 seed Kaygen Roberts 4-2 in in Round of 32. Lohr lost his Round of 16 tilt against 6 seed Dominic Way 8-6, sending the future Cowboy to the backside of the bracket.
There, Lohr picked up wins against 13 seed Parker Casey, 3 seed Jesse Grajeda and 4 seed Lincoln Robideau (Landon’s younger brother). Michael Ruane, the 9 seed, beat him 4-1, sending Lohr to the seventh-place match, where he bested 17 seed Luke Knox 7-4. So, Lohr went 7-2 at Super 32, with his two losses coming to wrestlers who finished fifth and sixth.
