It’s been a windy past few days in Oklahoma, but the Cowboys created their own wind in Nashville on Friday.

The Oklahoma State baseball team lost its season-opener to Vanderbilt 3-0 in a game the Cowboys struck out 18 times in. Five Cowboys struck out twice, and two Cowboys struck out three times. Every OSU starter had at least one strikeout.

OSU starting pitcher Justin Campbell, a preseason All-American, tried to keep pace with the strikeout fest. In four innings, he struck out eight Commodores.

Vanderbilt got the scoring started in the third inning when Jack Bugler singled to left-center and Enrique Bradfield scored from third. Two batters later, Bulger scored off a Dominic Keegan double.

The Commodores scored the game’s final run in the fourth inning when Tate Kolwyck hit a solo home run off the left-field foul pole.

Despite all the strikeouts, the Cowboys did have some opportunities to score.

The Pokes left the bases loaded in the third inning when Hueston Morrill and Jake Thompson hit singles and transfer first baseman Griffin Doersching got on via walk. But then a strikeout ended the frame.

The Cowboys left two on in the sixth after a Doersching walk and Marcus Brown got on from an error. But then a strikeout ended the frame.

OSU again left two on in the seventh when Caeden Trenkle and Thompson were walked. But then a strikeout ended the frame.

The bright spot of the game for the Pokes was probably their bullpen. Kentucky transfer Dillon Marsh and Ohio State transfer Bayden Root combined to pitch four innings where they allowed no runs off two hits.

Thompson was the only Cowboy with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a walk and a strikeout.

These teams will do it again Saturday and Sunday.
