OSU Coach Mike Boynton a Candidate in St. John’s Head Coaching Search
Boynton is being targeted by St. John’s.
Mike Boynton, the Brooklyn, New York native who just wrapped his second full season coaching at Oklahoma State, is drawing unexpected interest from St. John’s as the program looks to fill its coaching vacancy in the wake of firing alumnus Chris Mullin.
According to multiple media reports that surfaced on Wednesday and again. on Thursday, Boynton is among a handful of names the program is considering.
It appeared to start and end rather quickly on Wednesday night when a reporter from the New York Post mentioned Boynton’s name then quickly tweeted out that Boynton had no interest. But, as the ever-reputable New York Post is wont to do, the same reporter deleted the post about Boynton having no interest and instead fired this tweet out into the world.
Apologize for earlier tweet. Mike Boynton hasn not declined interest in St. John's job. #sjubb

Talk about a rollercoaster! My colleague Matt Norlander dropped this one on Thursday morning, and so we go, back down the ride that no one expected to be on. The big news is A.) Boynton is a candidate and B.) Tim Cluess is withdrawing. Cluess had been considered a frontrunner since the vacancy opened, and the fanbase had recently rallied around him.
St. John’s update: With Iona’s Tim Cluess withdrawing from the proceedings, source tells me Yale's James Jones is interviewing today, and that former Arkansas coach Mike Anderson has also become a candidate of interest. Oklahoma State’s Mike Boynton is still in mix as well.

Boynton is from the area, could recruit the region well, and has enough spunk to deal with wacky reporters who fire tweets and just as quickly delete them into oblivion. But … St. John’s isn’t exactly a step up. Perhaps he’ll wind up getting a raise out of this circus, or perhaps, with two seasons in which he hasn’t taken OSU to the tournament and knowing he may be on the hot seat if he doesn’t get there in 2019, he’ll use the Johnnies as a parachute to a destination closer to home.
Strap in.
