OSU Fall Camp Update: Glenn Spencer Is Already In Midseason Form

Glenn Spencer is the best. It’s August 9, and he’s in the throes of fretting and worrying about his 11 guys on defense like it’s October 28 and OSU is still undefeated. I love it. He has good reason to worry too. OSU has been bad in defensive efficiency the last two years. With an above average year (for OSU standards) this season, this team could legitimately win the Big 12.

Spencer was asked on Monday what he’s preaching at practice. His answer was amazing.

“Of course, effort,” said Spencer.

Of course.

“Any great defense I’ve ever been around has played with great emotion and great intensity, so you get out here in 90 percent humidity and they’re soaking wet, sweating,” added Spencer.

They are not the only ones.

“You’ve got to take them through those valleys to chisel that into them,” said Spencer.

Think about how great that quote is. Take them through those valleys to chisel that into them.

“We did that today. Some of them responded well and some of them didn’t, so we’ll go look at the tape and just try to win tomorrow. That’s the biggest thing is to just win the next practice. Don’t worry about the season yet, don’t worry about the first opponent. We’ve got a lot of things to worry about internally before we can think about anything else.”

This is true of course, and nobody is better at presenting it than Spencer. He knows his defense will have to roll deep against some wicked good Big 12 offense.

“We’ve got some maturity and we’ve got some guys that have played enough where that can’t happen, and shouldn’t happen. Now, our challenge is to create some depth so that some guys know how to respond when there’s a lot of pressure. There’s a lot of work to be done there.”

Yes there is.
