Make it a dozen NCAA titles for the Cowboys, and this one was won with a young group.

Oklahoma State beat Virginia on Wednesday at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in the national final. The Cowboys won three matches, lost one and were leading in the other when the win was secured. OSU’s title-winning quintet features four sophomores and a freshman.

“Oklahoma State has now won 12 championships, but it’s the first one with these kids,” OSU coach Alan Bratton said. “They’ve heard stories, and we’ve had some of our best players of all time talk to them just a couple of weeks ago. Now they have their own stories to share and a responsibility for them to continue to deliver those messages to the younger players so that we can keep this thing going. You hope for that kind of chemistry in every group, and we’ve got it with this team.”

Sophomore Eric Lee pulled through for the Cowboys in Tuesday night’s semifinal, and he clinched the national title Wednesday.

Lee and Josh Duangmanee were tied going into the 17th when Lee hit a beautiful birdie putt to take the lead.

For good measure, Lee hit a ridiculous shot out of the rough on 18, leading to another birdie.

Hailing from Fullerton, California, Lee spent his freshman season at Cal before transferring to OSU this past offseason.

“I don’t think I can even explain it in words,” said Lee of being a national champ. “It feels unreal. It’s going to be pretty emotional. I’m going to try to soak it in.”

Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson, a freshman from Sweden, put the first point on the board when he toppled Maxi Puregger 3-and-1. After a rollercoaster of a matchup in OSU’s semifinal win against Ole Miss, Fahlberg-Johnsson led this match from start to finish.

Sophomore Gaven Lane scored point No. 2 when he bested Paul Chang 4-for-3. Chang was two up on the front nine. Lane tied things up with a birdie on the ninth before this clutch birdie putt to remain tied on the 11th.

That putt seemed to turn the tides in the match, as Lane won the next four holes to secure the point.

Ethan Fang was up a hole when the team battle was clinched. Preston Stout lost his matchup 3-and-2 to Ben James.

It’s OSU’s first golf title since 2018 when the Matthew Wolff-Viktor Hovland Cowboys won at Karsten Creek. Before that, OSU’s last title was in 2006.
