FRISCO, Texas — EA Sports’ new game, College Football 27, has now been out for a week, and the Cowboys should be more fun to play than last year’s edition.

The Cowboys’ overall rating of 83 puts them in a multi-way tie for 21st in the game, led largely by the strength of the offense, which ranked 17th overall and second in the Big 12 behind only BYU.

Quarterback Drew Mestemaker starts the game with an overall rating of 89, putting him in a tie for ninth best among quarterbacks.

“It’s good, they did me pretty good, but a 90 wouldn’t hurt,” Mestemaker said last week at Big 12 Media Days.

Mestemaker isn’t the only Cowboy rated among the very best at his position. Running back Caleb Hawkins is seventh at his position with an initial rating of 91 overall.

“I did not know that, nice to hear, though,” Hawkins said.

Edge Jaleel Johnson will have to earn a high rating in the game with his performance on the field this fall, but he’s okay with that. Johnson said he can’t disagree with the rating, given how little he played last season.

“I’m hard on myself,” he said. “I feel like I didn’t play to the standard that I wanted to be at anyway, so I feel like that is fair.”

Johnson said fellow defender Malik Charles is one of the better players on the team at playing the game. Johnson, Hawkins and Mestemaker all seemed excited for the game’s release.

“The team definitely gets excited,” Johnson said. “We all crack jokes ‘oh how are you that low’ or ‘how you that high?’ We just make fun of it. It is all fun and games.”

Five Cowboys start the game ranked top three at their position among Big 12 teams.

WR Wyatt Young- First Team, WR No. 3 (90 rating)

RB Caleb Hawkins- Second Team (91)

WLB Ethan Wesloski- Second Team (87)

QB Drew Mestemaker- Third Team (89)

CB Mo Horn- Third Team, CB No. 2 (86)
