BOXSCORE

On Friday, the Cowgirls got the best of the best offense in the Big 12. On Saturday, the Wildcats got some payback.

No. 18 Oklahoma State fell to No. 12 Arizona 12-4 in run-rule fashion, thanks to a big rally culminating in a grand slam.

The Cowgirls went up 3-0 in the top of the first and made it a 4-2 lead in the third, but the Wildcats’ bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth. OSU never recovered.

As stated, the Cowgirls didn’t take long to etch the scoreboard. Tallen Edwards, OSU’s lead-off batter, was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on a Tia Warsop single. Then they added two more off a Karli Godwin double that bounced just down the third-base line but stayed in, even after an official review after a challenge.

The Wildcats answered with a run in the bottom of the first on a Kaiah Altmeyer double and then pulled to within 3-2 when Megan Bloodworth missed making the play on a tight hop that bounced off her in the second.

Amanda Hasler gained back some ground for OSU with a solo home run in the top of the third to make it 4-2.

Arizona tied it with two runs in the third but then blew things open with six-run fourth.

Wildcats catcher Sydney Stewart took a ball to the shoulder at the plate in the top of the fourth, and they had to stop the game as she recovered, obviously upset. She got some payback on her next at-bat.

The Wildcats enacted the run rule in the fifth with a pair of scores. Based on the way they were taking advantage of the Cowgirls’ pitching staff, there’s a reason they call it the mercy rule.

The Cowgirls have an absolute ace in Ruby Meylan but have had trouble counting on the rest of their staff. That was on full display Saturday.

RyLee Crandall got the start but lasted just two innings, giving up two runs. Katie Kutz came in for an innings but gave up five runs, walked three and struck out two Wildcats. Then came Kyra Aycock. In five and a third innings she gave up five more runs, walked three and struck out one. The Cowgirls finished with Kathryn Ogg. She got one out but then allowed the walk-off RBI.

Overall, Arizona was 11-for-26 (.423) hitting and OSU only managed three strikeouts and allowed six walks. The Wildcats came in leading the Big 12, batting .366.

Ruby Meylan was seen warming up but never left the bullpen. OSU’s ace came into the day leading the Big 12 in innings pitched and hung in for 141 pitches the night before, so it was obvious that OSU’s staff was going to give her rest. Plus, there’s an important series finale on Sunday.

In the series opener on Friday, the Cowgirls fell behind 2-0 in the first and both teams went scoreless until OSU scored four runs in the seventh to win it with a Claire Timm solo homer followed by a Rosie Davis three-run homer.

With Saturday’s loss, the Cowgirls fall to 22-10 and 5-4 in Big 12 play. The rubber match will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Tucson.
