After an up-and-down opening two weekends of softball seasons, the Cowgirls’ pitching staff went into lockdown mode Friday at the Reveille Classic.

Oklahoma State beat Tennessee State 9-0 and Texas A&M 1-0 during the first day of the event in College Station, Texas. The No. 11 Cowgirls advanced to 8-4 on the season. Here are recaps of Friday’s games.

Oklahoma State 9, Tennessee State 0

Illinois State transfer pitcher Morgan Day threw all of the five innings needed against the Tigers, allowing only two hits while walking two and striking out nine of the 18 batters she faced.

Day got run support early, as OSU had a pair of first inning solo home runs coming from Kiley Naomi and Julia Cottrill.

The Cowgirls were getting help from everywhere in the lineup as six different OSU players had RBIs. Senior outfielder Chelsea Alexander was the only Cowgirl with two. A pair of runs scored on her second-inning single. The Cowgirls put up four runs in that second inning.

Sydney Pennington, Taylor Tuck and Karli Petty each had multi-hit games, combining to go 6-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

On two occasions, the Tigers had a runner on second base, the closest they came to scoring.

In 30 innings pitched this season, only two runners have scored on Kelly Maxwell.

Maxwell threw the Cowgirls’ second complete-game shutout of the day in the Cowgirls’ game against the host Aggies. In seven innings, Maxwell allowed only one hit while walking five and striking out 13. She has a 0.47 ERA on the year and has struck out more than half of the batters she has faced.

The Aggies lone hit came in the seventh inning and made things quite interesting. Shaylee Ackerman’s two-out single put runners on the corners for the Aggies. Then Maxwell slammed the door shut with a strikeout to end the game.

The Cowgirls’ run came in the first inning when Cottrill singled to left, scoring Naomi from third. The Cowgirls left the bases loaded that inning. They also left a pair of runners on in the fourth.
