BOXSCORE

In the previous two postgame interviews, OSU head coach Kenny Gajewski has challenged his offense, and even his team. On Saturday, they responded.

No. 17 Oklahoma State defeated Iowa State 10-1 by run-rule. A day after the Cowgirls came short of a walk-off win and then lost in extra innings, they got the walk-off in just six.

But things started off like they ended on Friday night.

Iowa State’s Sydney Malott opened things up with a solo home run in the top of the second, probably giving Cowgirl fans a little PTSD from the afternoon prior. She had cranked two home runs out of Cowgirl Stadium on Friday. But the Cowgirls settled in on defense, and then their bats, finally, came to life. They logged 10 runs in a span of four innings, including three home runs. The Cyclones didn’t score again.

The Cowgirls scored two in the third thanks to a Karli Godwin groundout that sent Rosie Davis and Tallen Edwards (unearned) across the plate.

Although she didn’t manage a round-tripper, Davis continued her impressive stretch, extending her hit streak to eight games and tying her career high with three hits. She was 3-for-4 for with an RBI single in the fourth.

Rachael Hathoot recorded her first home run of the year, a solo bomb that the Cowgirls up 4-1 in the fifth.

Later in the inning, Megan Bloodworth blew things open with a three-run dinger to make it 7-1.

Then Lexi McDonald also logged her first homer of the season, another three-run bomb to cement the walk-off win.

It was the offensive bounce-back Kenny G. was calling for. OSU had dropped the series opener to Iowa State 5-4, pushing their losing streak to four and following up a disappoint neutral-site Bedlam loss in OKC.

The other side of Gajewski’s point was about ace pitcher Ruby Meylan and having to depend too heavily on her for every win. The tables were turned on that front as well. With getting some much-deserved rest, RyLee Crandall got the start and improved to 2-2 in one for her best games of the season. Crandall struck out three, walked one and allowed just three hits for one run in four and a third innings. Katie Kutz came into close and was also solid, allowing three hits and no runs and striking out a pair Cyclones.

With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 24-13 and 6-6 in Big 12 play. The rubber match is set for 12 p.m. Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium.
