STILLWATER — The Cowgirls hadn’t swept a Big 12 opponent this season, but they’ll enter the postseason with some momentum after getting the brooms out and brushing aside the Utes.

Oklahoma State beat Utah 4-1 on Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium to put a bow on the regular season.

“I think we’re doing some nice things,” OSU coach Kenny Gajewksi said. “It’s kind of what I expect, but I like where we’re at. I think getting through this part now kind of opens you up to a new season now. We’ll kind of talk about that and just keep plugging away at that. But I like where the team’s at.”

OSU (33-17, 13-9 Big 12) got the scoring started in the first when Karli Godwin singled to left and brought Megan “Cheese” Delgadillo home.

If you needed further proof that sophomore second baseman Rosie Davis had the clutch gene, she provided that proof in the second inning. With two on and two out, Davis drilled a ball to the left field wall that resulted in a two-RBI double, giving the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead. Davis is up to 49 RBIs this season, a team-high.

OSU’s final run came in the third — a Megan Bloodworth sacrifice fly that scored Tia Warsop.

The Utes got one back in the fifth when Ruby Meylan left the circle for Kyra Aycock. Aycock got in some early trouble, allowing a leadoff single before walking the second batter she faced. She struck batter No. 3 out before Shelbi Ortiz drilled a ball to the left-field wall, scoring a run. The Utes then loaded the bases with an infield single, ending Aycock’s outing.

Meylan reemerged from the dugout with the bases loaded and the one out and proceeded to force two ground balls to Tallen Edwards at third. Edwards threw the first groundball home for a force out and threw the second to first base, ending the inning with minimal damage. Gajewski said it was part of the gameplan to give Meylan some practice at reentering games, but the manner of which that happened didn’t go exactly to plan.

So, Meylan started and finished the game but threw 6 2/3 innings as opposed to a full seven. She allowed no runs off four hits while walking one and striking out five. Through her first regular season as a Cowgirl, Meylan has a 1.59 ERA.

“I thought she was good,” Gajewski said. “She didn’t have a ton (of strikeouts) today, but got a lot of kinda easy outs. Lot of groundballs. She’s really becoming a better defender, too. We’ve been really working hard on that. That’ll save her some hits and some runs. Thought she did a really nice job of that.”

The game had a peculiar end to it with a 5-6-3 single play. Kaylah Nelson ripped a groundball toward Edwards, who showed some athleticism to get some leather on it, but the ball ramped up her glove past her. Bloodworth was covering for Edwards, though, as the ball popped right into Bloodworth’s glove and she threw to first to end the game.

“I feel like I have confidence that she’s gonna catch everything anyway, but she got it over and it was just luck that it popped right there,” Bloodworth said. “I was gonna have her back anyway, so it just worked.”

A stat that needs some context might suggest the Cowgirls offense is on an uptick: In OSU’s first four Big 12 series, the Cowgirls totaled 32 runs; in OSU’s final four Big 12 series, the Cowgirls totaled 61 runs. Now, the biggest caveat to that is the fact that OSU got only one game in against Houston because of the fires. Houston happens to be the last-place team in the league. Still, from a runs per game perspective, OSU scored 3.2 a game in those first four series and 5.1 in the second set of series. Another thing to note with that stat is that OSU’s conference schedule was frontloaded. OSU started the year against Texas Tech (1 seed in the tourney) and finished that first four-series stretch against Arizona (2 seed in the tourney). Still, it feels like the Cowgirls bats have taken a step forward as of late.

OSU will open its Big 12 Tournament at 11 a.m. Thursday against Arizona State. The Cowgirls and Sun Devils didn’t play a regular season series but did play a standalone nonconference game when OSU traveled to Arizona for its series against the Wildcats. OSU won that April 2 game against ASU 4-0.
