The GOAT immortalized.

The GOAT will formally — and finally — be immortalized at Oklahoma State.

The athletic department announced on Thursday that Barry Sanders will be inducted into the Ring of Honor on Nov. 13 as OSU welcomes TCU in town for a conference showdown. OSU also said a sculptor is working on a statue of Sanders that will be on display outside the stadium. It doesn’t sound as though the statue will be done by Nov. 13.

Sanders will become the second former player inducted into the Cowboy Football Ring of Honor joining his former teammate and fellow Hall of Fame running back, Thurman Thomas, who was inducted in 2020. Sanders will be the first former player to have his own statue. The same sculptor who made the T. Boone Pickens statue unveiled in 2020 is working on the Sanders statue.

This has long been in the works by OSU brass dating back years, with Mike Gundy in 2018 (!) saying a Sanders statue was on his wish list for the program in an effort to improve relations and recognition for past stars.

“We’ll have a statue of Barry up. I can’t give you a date on that. I don’t play much of a role in that other than I thought we needed it,” said Gundy. “We’re going to do a better job of recognizing former players.”
