OSU Wrestling Commits Shine at Super 32 as Plott Wins Title
One of the toughest high school wrestling tournaments in the country was this Saturday, and a few future Cowboys were participating. Dustin Plott, Konner Doucet, Brevin Balmeceda, and Chance McLane all made their way to the Super 32 in North Carolina this past weekend.
Plott might have been the most impressive wrestler in the entire tournament, taking took home a belt at 170 pounds and possibly winning Outstanding Wrestler, they announce Tuesday and it will almost certainly be Dustin.

Plott came in as the No. 1 seed, and pretty comfortably worked his way to the semifinals before he reached much resistance. There he took on Northwestern commit Troy Fisher, where he won 4-3. Plott was the aggressor the whole match. He got in on a number of shots, but was unable to finish and separate the score much. Fisher’s a solid wrestler though and did a great job fighting off Plott’s finishes.
Then came the final vs. Iowa commit Patrick Kennedy. It didn’t disappoint. Naturally you have the Iowa-OSU rivalry to set up a story line, along with these two being a few of the top recruits in their class, but Plott came out firing. Lots of offense, lots of shots and lots of scoring. It stayed close as Kennedy got a few reversals and had some other timely scoring, but Plott looked very good here. He fended off the “Iowa style” attack of Kennedy with his heavy hands and physical ties and ultimately picked Kennedy apart on his feet winning the match 16-12.

Konner Doucet followed up Plott’s title with a runner up finish at 220. He worked his way through his bracket, that was nearly the size of his hometown, picking up three decisions and a major before reaching the finals. Doucet’s athleticism is impressive for a big guy. He has some good low level shots and go behinds that you usually don’t see with 200+ pound guys. The tight matches made me a little nervous, but he consistently came out on top in all of them. And against some of the best competition in the country. In the final he ran into returning champ and top ranked Braxton Amos and fell 5-0.
At 152 Brevin Balmeceda was attempting to defend the title he won here last year. He worked his way to the round of 32 and lost a controversial match where he was DQ’d for a slam while attempting a mat return. He had a solid lead at the time. He fought back through the consolation side, taking out one seed Ryan Anderson in the consolation semifinals. He lost 3-2 in the third place match and finished fourth.
McLane went 2-2 in the tournament at 145 and did not place.
Overall very good showing for these guys. Plott looked every bit of his blue chip reputation and a solid tournament for Balmeceda and Doucet as well.
