STILLWATER — The Cowboys needed some last-match magic to escape Norman with a win in December; they needed no such magic Thursday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Oklahoma State beat Bedlam rival Oklahoma 26-6. The Cowboys now lead the all-time series 149-27-10. OSU coach John Smith moves to 56-6-3 in Bedlam duals. OU hasn’t won a dual against OSU since 2013.

“We win Bedlam,” Smith said. “Little cocky words that you say, you have to have an attitude if you say it. I tell my guys all the time, ‘We win Bedlam, but you gotta have an attitude if you’re gonna go around saying that.’ I think for the most part there’s a level of spirit about it, and there’s a level of comfort knowing that a lot of past teams have done really well. And let me tell you something, try losing one. That’s not good.

“Those lopsided victories over the years are because of some really, really good wrestlers. Sure made me look good.”

The match of the night came at 141 pounds where No. 15 Carter Young upset No. 7 Mosha Schwartz 5-3. The bout included a handful of scrambles that Young more often than not navigated better than Schwartz did. It also included each coach tossing their challenge brick — OU’s challenge was successful, OSU’s was not.

After a scoreless first period, Schwartz started the second with and escape before Young scored a takedown. Schwartz escaped again, and Young took him down again. There was a locked-hands call at the end of the period that made Young’s lead 4-3. Young has struggled getting off bottom early in his career, but he was able to escape in the third and navigated a few scrambles in the period to close it out.

Young’s win avenges an early season loss to Schwartz, and it makes Young 7-1 in his past eight matches. The only loss in that stretch came last week to No. 10 Clay Carlson of South Dakota State.

With Young’s recent on-mat success, Smith said he is now looking for some more intensity from Young.

“I’d like for him sometimes to just cuss at me — not cuss at me, you don’t need to cuss at me, but just get angry with me,” Smith said. “Maybe even push me. Just push me, something. He’s a good kid. I just think to get your best out of yourself, I want him to feel pain when he loses. I want him to feel disappointment. I want him to be driven off those losses, and I think he does it in a quiet way a little bit, but not as much as I want.”

Speaking of wrestlers who avenged Norman losses, Victor Voinovich beat Mitch Moore 2-0 with a second period rideout and a third period escape. Since the Southern Scuffle, Voinovich is 7-4 with all of those losses coming in matches decided by two or fewer points.

Konner Doucet also avenged his early season loss to OSU villain Josh Heindselman. It was your classic, lumbering heavyweight matchup. The only points scored in regulation were escapes. After a scoreless sudden victory, Doucet rode Heindselman and avoided getting taken down, winning via tiebreaker.

The Cowboys scored bonus points at 133 and 157.

Daton Fix scored a major decision over Wyatt Henson for the second time this year. After beating Henson 14-5 in Norman, Fix won 15-6 on Thursday, scoring 11 of those points in the first period.

At 157, senior Kaden Gfeller nearly finished his GIA career with a pin, putting Jacob Butler on his back at the end of the third period. The 4-point nearfall gave Gfeller a 14-3 major decision.
