Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson Praise Chris Carson After Breakout Game Against 49ers

With running back Eddie Lacy a healthy scratch for the Seahawks on Sunday, former Oklahoma State running back Chris Carson saw an increased workload and made the most of his opportunity in the backfield alongside Russell Wilson.

Carson logged 20 carries for 93 hard-earned yards and 1 reception for 7 yards, an uptick from his 6-carry, 1-reception game against Green Bay a week ago. He also had 15 more carries than the second running back Thomas Rawls on the day.

By all indications, Carson is your new starting running back for the Seahawks. He’s been more productive, shown more promise, and pass-blocked like a true pro when given the chance.

Head coach Pete Carroll showered praise on the rookie after Sunday’s 12-9 win.

“Chris looked really good,” Carroll said. “I thought Chris has shown us nothing but really positive stuff. There’s a style in the way he runs that you might recognize, you know, that high knees and big chomping and that groundup. He’s really downhill at you. We’ve seen it for a long time, and we just hope to see it continue. I think he’s a really good football player, he’s a good pass blocker, he’s a good catcher and route-runner. That’s a lot of positives for a first time guy.”

Against Green Bay in Week 1, Seattle’s offensive line struggled to get any push up front. Russell Wilson finished the day against the Packers as the rushing leader, just ahead of Carson and CJ Prosise in the box score. It was more of the same on Sunday when the game began, but Carson kept pounding and finally was able to find wiggle room as the game progressed — much to the delight of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson.

“I thought he did a tremendous job,” Wilson said. “He kept battling, he kept running hard downhill. It’s a tribute to our offensive line to be able to trust those [1-yard runs] and [2 yard runs] early were going to break open near the end of the game, and sure enough they did.”
