Predicting OSU Football’s Next Possible Commitments

OSU football on the heels of a mid-summer mini-camp in Stillwater this past week landed a big commitment on Thursday as receiver Camron Heard picked the Pokes over Arkansas and more than a dozen other schools. Heard’s commitment gives OSU nine commitments in the 2023 cycle, but there are still plenty of other spots still in need of being filled. So who is next?

My best guesses are below. We typically see a lot of movement on the recruiting front between now and the start of the season, especially with recruits wanting to end recruitment before their football seasons, so think of this as my own crystal ball for the next few months.

1. Davhon Keys | Linebacker

OSU offered Keys back in February and recently (in April!) hosted him on campus for an unofficial visit. The three-star linebacker from Aledo, Texas, recently picked up OU and Arkansas offers to cloudy his forecast, but don’t be surprised if the Pokes’ early buy-in pays off.

2. Trey Wilson | Defensive line

This would be a coup. Wilson’s an elite talent, even if his three-star ranking doesn’t suggest as much. Nearly three dozen schools have offered, including Michigan, USC and Arkansas. But the coaching staff at OSU has done this right. They were his first offer in early 2021. They’ve hosted him numerous times for visits. They have a real shot to be a disruptor in the race to land him even in an increasingly blueblood-heavy battle.

3. John Randle Jr. | Running back

The success of running backs named J. Randle at Oklahoma State are so far carrying a 100% hit rate. So of course OSU should be a factor here! But also, this may help: John Randle Jr. is the nephew of former Cowboy tailback Joseph Randle. As such, they were one of his first offers two years ago. Texas, Florida State, Louisville among those in the mix.

4. Lonnie Johnson | Wide receiver

With Camron Heard in the fold for 2023, OSU has a receiver locked in. But Heard’s a pass-catcher with a smaller 5-foot-11 frame. Lonnie Johnson could be a nice complement at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, and he’s already gotten interest from OSU with an offer landing back in February. He’s been mostly hidden on the recruiting scene thus far — he’s barely ranked as a three-star — but he profiles as someone who this staff would love given his size and ability to high point the ball.

5. Taje McCoy | Defensive line

OSU offered McCoy during a recent Junior Day visit to Stillwater. The Putnam City product is already quickly becoming a favorite among Big 12 programs, though, with Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State also in the mix. I like OSU’s chances here to keep him in the state, but it’s still very early.
