Punter Tom Hutton Announces His OSU Career Is Over after Injury in Manhattan

Tom Hutton, believed to be the the oldest player in the FBS this season, announced Tuesday his college career is over.

Hutton went down in the fourth quarter of Oklahoma State’s 48-0 loss to Kansas State this past weekend after trying to make a tackle. He made his announcement via Instagram. Hutton has another year of eligibility because of COVID, but at 32, he has said on many occasions he doesn’t intend on using it.

Hutton leads the Big 12 with 18 punts downed inside the 20-yard line, and he leads the league with 1,929 punt yards. He set up a pair of safeties this season against Central Michigan and Baylor.

Hutton came to Stillwater from Newborough, Australia via ProKick Austrailia, a program that has produced many Division-I punters since its inception.

His pinpoint accuracy and ability to force muffs with funky spin has made him a fan favorite in Stillwater. Before this season’s safeties, his most famous play was a forced muff in Bedlam last season that set up Oklahoma State’s go-ahead touchdown over Oklahoma.

With Hutton out, Logan Ward will punt for the Cowboys. A redshirt freshman from Deer Creek High School, Ward has two college punts that have averaged 57.5 yards. He has also kicked off 27 times this year, resulting in 12 touchbacks.

“Logan is our backup punter and punts really good,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said Monday. “I feel comfortable with him coming in and punting. Now, he’s inexperienced. Kind of the same thing we were talking about with quarterback. Little bit different than quarterbacks because it’s more magnified, but I feel good about Logan if he has to come in and punt. He’s gone good job at practice and worked hard, done a good job, and I’m comfortable with him.”
