Help is on the way for the Oklahoma State basketball team.

After finishing the season with seven scholarship players, the addition of the nation’s 23rd-ranked recruiting class is a welcome sight to many in Stillwater. Avery Anderson, a 6-foot-2 combo guard from Justin, Texas, is one of the four signed players in OSU’s 2019 class. Anderson, a four-star recruit, is the 124th-ranked prospect in the country. I had a chance to talk with him over the phone Monday afternoon. Here is our conversation.

What made OSU stand out as the place you wanted to go?

The reason I chose OSU was just because I feel like I bonded with Coach Boynton better out of all the coaches. He was honest with me from the jump and saying that if I come there and work, I could possibly have a starting position and make a big impact in what they’re trying to do.

How much have you gotten to know Marcus Watson, Kalib Boone and Keylan Boone? Have you had any chances to talk with them at all?

We talk a lot. We have a group message going on. We don’t even talk about basketball stuff. We’ll just be talking and communicating with each other about how it’s going to be fun next year playing with each other.

How long has that group message being going on?

I would say about three weeks.

There are a few guys on OSU’s team now from the DFW area in Isaac Likekele and Cam McGriff. Do you know those guys at all?

Oh yeah, of course. I played against Isaac a couple times, and he beat me twice. I played him at his house, then I played him at my house and he beat me both times, but it’s alright. Cam, I just know Cam. I didn’t get to play against Cam because he was older, but I’ve known of him.

I think Boynton mentioned at some point that Isaac kind of helped recruit you, is that kind of how it went?

Yeah. Me and Isaac have a good relationship with each other, just being from the same place and just playing against each other and just being around each other a long time. So yeah, he did play a big part in why I chose OSU.

What would you say are some of your biggest strengths on the court?

My biggest strength is playing defense because nobody wants to play defense, so you gotta lock up on defense. Playmaking, getting my teammates involved while also making plays for myself and getting it going and scoring the ball.

OSU had a tough season this year, whenever you see that what goes through your mind?

I just can’t wait to come in and make a big impact for the team because I know what they need. I wish I could’ve helped them this year to be honest, but I gotta wait my turn. Next year it will be my turn, and I can’t wait to come in and be a big help.

What are you most looking forward to coming up to Stillwater?

Just playing in front of the fans, the OSU fans. I think that’s going to be very enjoyable, and I can’t wait for that.

What are some of your goals for next season?

Win Big 12 conference champs, win Big 12 Tournament champs, all that.
