QB Pledge Brendan Costello Injured During Yurcich Visit to California

OSU’s prized QB pledge suffered a setback.

OSU offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich spent part of his bye week on West Coast time, flying all the way to Cali to see his 2019 Q pledge, Brendan Costello, in action against Mission Viejo according to GoPokes.com. Instead, however, he saw his future signal-caller ride the pine after suffering a head injury early in the contest.

The OC Register reports that Costello, who recently picked up a big offer from Georgia, suffered a concussion in the second quarter and was sidelined for the remainder of the game. The player who dealt him the blow was ejected for targeting (and probably dealt a mean side-eye by Yurcich).

The visit wasn’t all lost for Yurcich, though. He got to scout a talent-rich high school program in San Clemente that’s produced Division I talent like a factory over the years, and may have caught an early glimpse at a youngster on the rise in QB Drayton Joseph. Joseph, a junior who replaced Costello, hit 17 of his 28 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, notable simply because San Clemente has produced QBs like Sam Darnold, Travis Wilson and Jack Sears over the years.

Costello is ranked as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and the No. 22 dual-threat prospect in 2019 according to the 247Sports composite. He picked OSU to little fanfare back in June over Air Force, Army Brown and other small programs, but his senior season production has drawn in plenty of interest elsewhere as he continues to impress in a pre-college breakout season.

According to MaxPreps, Costello, through 10 games, has amassed 2014 yards passing, 20 touchdowns to 3 interceptions, and completed 65.1 percent of his passes. He also has 574 yards rushing.
