Quarterback to Back: Sam Jackson V to Make his First OSU Start as the Cowboys Host Conner Weigman, Cougars
After some questions earlier this week, the QB matchup appears to be set.
After some question as to who would take snaps earlier this week, it appears both the Cowboys and Cougars know who’s starting at quarterback.
Oklahoma States hosts Houston on Saturday morning and will do so with a third starting QB. Sam Jackson V has completed transition from quarterback to wide receiver to quarterback after both Hauss Hejny and now Zane Flores are out with injury.
Houston’s quarterback situation was also in question earlier this week as Conner Weigman went through concussion protocol. But with him listed as probable on the Big 12’s availability report, it appears he’s on track to play.
Let’s take a look at the matchup between the two, but first here are their numbers thus far.
| QB2B | Jackson | Weigman |
|---|---|---|
| Att. | 11 | 118 |
| Comp. | 7 | 70 |
| Pct. | 63.6% | 59.3% |
| Yds | 77 | 910 |
| Yds/Att | 7.0 | 7.7 |
| TD | 1 | 6 |
| INT | 0 | 2 |
| Rating | 152.44 | 137.49 |
| QBR | N/A | 53.1 (83rd) |
| Rushing TDs | 0 | 4 |
The obvious difference here is that one has been the starter for five games and the other has barely completed five passes.
Though he had stops as a quarterback at TCU and Cal, Jackson has been a full-time receiver the last two years. He hasn’t suited up as quarterback since September 30, 2023, when Cal defeated Arizona State. He only played receiver at Auburn and was just recently included in the QB room at Oklahoma State.
Weigman spent his first three seasons at Texas A&M where he saw spot duty in the quarterback rotation before transferring to Houston. He comes into Saturday with career totals of 3,604 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also has six rushing scores.
In four years, Weigman has 31 total TDs while Jackson boasts 10 in going on five.
Both have the ability to beat you in more than one way. We’ve seen how OSU used Jackson in gadget duty before he was handed the keys to the offense.
Weigman also has some dual-threat abilities, having rushed for 148 yards and four rushing TDs this year alone. His attempts and totals fell off a cliff the last two games. After averaging 11 rushes and 47 yards per game over the first three weeks, he’s rushed just 12 times for 6 total yards in the last two. That does include an early first-half exit in the loss against Texas Tech.
His passing has also taken a hit. After completing at least 62.5% of his attempts in the first three, he’s turned in outings of 55.6% and 41.7% respectively the last two. And if he’s not 100% that could also signal an opportunity for the Cowboys.
Whichever Weigman shows up, the Cowboys have not been very good at slowing down anyone, and they continue to lose talent via the portal. So they’ll have their work cut out for them.
