A Quick Look At Oklahoma State’s 2016 Olympians

I always forget how much I’m entranced by the Olympics. I was completely locked in to a women’s road bike race on Sunday afternoon that had literally no bearing on the rest of my day or was anything I would have told you I found interesting before finding it on TV. Then I couldn’t stop watching.

My three-year-old daughter could not stop watching the diving so there I was watching women’s synchronized diving for 30 minutes. Then of course the swimming relays and track and field stuff is completely compelling.

But what about Oklahoma State ties? We all know Rickie Fowler is in Rio (with a questionable haircut), but he’s not the only former Poke at the 31st Olympic Games. Here’s a list of OSU athletes and what sports they will participate in (odds of winning event for events I could find in parentheses).

  • Rickie Fowler: Men’s Golf (U.S. 15-1 to win)
  • Caroline Masson: Women’s Golf (Germany, 40-1)
  • Pernilla Lindberg: Women’s Golf (Sweden, 50-1)
  • Tom Farrell: 5,000 Meters (Great Britain, 275-1)
  • Shadrack Kipchirchir: 10,000 Meters (U.S., 100-1)
  • Ingeborg Loevnes: 3,000 Meter Steeplechase (Norway)
  • Nick Miller: Hammer (Great Britain)

I would actually be concerned if I could find odds on the 3,000-meter steeplechase. So Kipchirchir and Fowler are the only ones we can double dip on cheering for with U.S. and OSU ties. Still, all seven will be fun to root on as they get going over the next week or so with their events. Fowler is especially pumped.

“The chance to put on the gear of the United States and play for my country in the Olympics is something I never dreamed about growing up, because it wasn’t something I could dream about,” said Fowler this week. “Now that I’m here, I don’t have the words to express how thankful I am.”
