Ranking the football uniforms: No. 16

The all blacks are really sharp but I don’t love them like this.

I rank these at No. 16 knowing full well that I’ll get crushed for having anything involving the blackout unis this low but before we get to why let’s take a closer look at this combo:

Uniform No. 16: Black (alt.)-Black-Black
Worn: TCU at home in 2012
Result(s): 1-0 (win 36-14 over TCU at home)

Okay, look, nobody dislikes the all blacks. Barry Switzer probably raises a glass of his own vino to these babies when they come on his 80-inch flat screen.

But the degree to which the all-black look is better with the regular helmet than it is with the crazy-eyes Pete helmet is severe. CEP isn’t gimmicky, per se, but the regular helmet jumps these from a top 20 ranking to a top 10 with ease.

One silly little logo. I mean, what about this isn’t absolutely terrifying?

I asked Carson Cunningham — a uniform connoisseur himself — to start weighing in on these rankings so you would get a different side of the coin. Here’s his take:

Carson: I can’t defend this ranking, Kyle.

Sure, Silly Pete does not look good. But it is most tolerable in this combo. Is Silly Pete clearly visible? No, but that’s par for the course.

Gundy did hint at some uni changes this year (Weeden fist pump) — is a Silly Pete makeover in store? Getting him to face the right direction would be a start. I would make him bigger, for sure.

All black speaks for itself. It’s one of the best looks OSU has and not even CEP can hold it back. This deserves to higher, but I’ll withhold judgment on how high. The Branded All-Blacks are easily top 5, these are just…good.

Bring on the top 15.
