Ranking the football uniforms: No. 26

More gray, a lot more gray, actually.

More of the grays today. This was the “Justin Gilbert makes Dana break all of the headsets” game.

Here’s a closer look at the combo:

Uniform No. 26: Black-Gray-Gray
Worn: 2012 against West Virginia
Result(s): 1-0 (55-34 win over West Virginia)
Black helmet: 1-0
Gray tops: 2-0
Gray pants: 1-0

I don’t hate these, but I don’t really love them, either. Like I said yesterday, I feel nothing towards the gray jerseys. They’re like the Lena Dunham of jerseys — really cool in a lot of circles, not cool to me.

This might be our leader in the clubhouse for the “one small swap would make this a top 10 uni” uni. Throw the black jerseys or even the orange jerseys (I think) on here and we’d have a winner.

Last thing: I feel like we got an irrational sense of how cool our bad-looking uniforms actually looked because we watched Justin Gilbert wear them for the last three years. That’s like Toms getting Gisele as a model and everybody saying “wow, this stuff is super high quality!”

I asked Carson Cunningham — a uniform connoisseur himself — to start weighing in on these rankings so you would get a different side of the coin. Here’s his take:

Carson: Justin Gilbert would make even these monstrosities look fantastic:

The 4-time Uniform Heisman winner will be missed.

I agree, Kyle: Don’t hate them, don’t love them.

Though I’ll reiterate the gray uniform with the predominantly black number is a huge improvement from the Old Grays. My main issue with this combo is I’m not really a fan of the jersey and pants matching, with a different colored helmet. Just looks…off. I wasn’t a fan of the WBB combo for the same reason (even though most loved them):

Black-Gray-Gray is probably in the right range, ranking-wise. Put orange or black pants on these and we really have something. You have to LOVE the gray uniforms to like this combo. Most don’t, so this is the right spot.
