Ranking the football uniforms: No. 27

Tracy Moore makes these uniforms look a lot cooler than they actually are.

The grays make an appearance!

This was the “why are their stomachs a different color than the rest of their bodies” game back in 2011. It was also the introduction of the new uniform scheme in general (that feels like forever ago, doesn’t it?)

Here’s a closer look:

Uniform No. 27: White-Gray-White
Worn: 2011 against Louisiana
Result(s): 1-0 (61-34 win over Louisiana)
White helmet: 1-0
Gray tops: 1-0
White pants: 1-0

Those last three are new, I’m keeping a running total of each piece’s record throughout this look at the unis.

This combo isn’t nearly as cool as that photo of Tracy Moore makes it look. For one — and thankfully OSU changed this — you couldn’t tell what number anybody was. I remember sitting about halfway up for this one thinking “man, Alex Cate’s arm got a hell of a lot better over the summer!”

I’m not in love with the gray in the first place and the white on each end doesn’t do much to help it. I will say I like the gray pants and carbon fiber helmet a lot more than the gray jerseys. I really don’t care that much for the gray jerseys. Not that I’m one of those “gray iz 4 Boomers!” people but I like it as an accent, not as a primary piece.

I asked Carson Cunningham — a uniform connoisseur himself — to start weighing in on these rankings so you would get a different side of the coin. Here’s his take:

Carson: This uniform should be ranked last, Kyle.

Let us count the ways the Old Grays:

Not legible? Check.
Sweat stains? Check.
Discontinued? Check.

How did Brandon Weeden give these babies approval for the debut of the new uniforms? I know you want to save the best combos for the best games, but everyone’s eyes hurt after this game. This was the uni equivalent of New Coke. The Old Timers surely had kittens.

I disagree with Kyle on the gray jerseys, I like the new ones a lot. It’s a sharp look.

I’m still waiting to see Black-Gray-Black.

Final verdict: These deserve to be ranked this low. I would put the all-orange combos higher than the white-Old Gray-whites.
