The Cowgirls tipped off the New Year with a dominant road win.

Oklahoma State defeated Baylor 84-61, turning a two-point halftime lead to a blowout in a matter of minutes.

The Cowgirls took a few minutes to hit their stride in Waco, but they settled in midway through the first quarter and took a 23-15 lead into the second. The Bears battled back in the second, the only quarter they would win, outscoring OSU 19-13. The Cowgirls went into halftime up 36-34.

OSU missed its last four shots heading into halftime but must have found the secret stuff in the locker room. In the first four minutes of the third quarter, OSU shot 5-of-7, while Baylor went just 1-of-11. All of the sudden, a two-point halftime lead had ballooned to 12. And once they got hot, the Cowgirls weren’t cooling down.

OSU shot 77% over the final two quarters while holding the Bears to just 27% from the field. The Cowgirls outscored the Bears by 21 points in the second half despite taking 19 fewer field goals.

Five different Cowgirls scored in double digits, but their leading scorer was not one of them. Micah Gray came in ranked seventh in the Big 12, scoring 17.4 points per game. She finished with nine on uncharacteristic 3-of-11 outing, shooting just 1-for-7 from 3. But that just shows how much firepower this team has.

Tenin Magassa led the way with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and grabbed four rebounds. Stailee Heard poured in 14, and Anna Gret Asi added 13 including eight points in the fourth quarter. Alexia Smith and Macey Huard each chipped in 11.

While the Cowgirls’ scoring numbers may not come as a surprise — OSU came in leading the Big 12 and ninth nationally in scoring — this type of blowout was not on anyone’s radar. Baylor came in averaging 84.9 points per game, and the Bears’ 32% shooting performance was a season low.

The Cowgirls have checked most of the boxes so far in the early goings of the season, but this was their first true road game — and only their third game outside of GIA. Road test passed.

With the win, OSU moves to 12-1 and 2-0 in Big 12 play. The Cowgirls received seven votes in this week’s Top 25 ranking which put them as the fourth team out. Keep winning like this, and they may break the ranking next Monday.  They’ll have a quick turnaround when they host Kansas at 2 p.m. Saturday.
