Report: Big 12 in Talks to Add UConn in Potential Expansion
The Huskies could join the Big 12 as early as 2026.
It looks like the Big 12 could be expanding again in the next couple of years, at least in most sports.
Multiple outlets are reporting that Big 12 brass is in talks with the University of Connecticut about joining the conference for all sports, with a slight delay built in for football.

According to an ESPN report, UConn athletic director David Benedict and board chair Daniel Toscano met the league’s ADs in Dallas last week.
The conversations centered around football funding and how UConn could be competitive upon joining the league in 2031, sources said.

The delay in football is apparently intended to allow the program to prepare for the step up in competition when it comes to funding and NIL. There’s a call scheduled among Big 12 decision makers next week to discuss the potential addition, according to The Athletic.
UConn’s football program was elevated the FBS in 2000 after a over two decades in the FCS and has operated as an independent since 2020. The Huskies have total seven bowl appearances and three bowl wins.
Huskie hoops, on the other hand, is as prestigious as it gets. The men’s program boast the third most NCAA championships at six (behind only UCLA and Kentucky) while the women’s program is the bluest of bluebloods with an all-time leading 11 national championships.
All other sports would be able to join the league once the school joined the league, if that were to take place.
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has been the driving force for the league’s expansion, effectively outflanking the Pac-12 into its demise after Oklahoma and Texas left for the SEC and the Big Ten poached its own big names Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.
