Report: Defensive Backs Coach Julian Wilson Following Morris, Cassity to Stillwater
Defending the pass has been a strength of Cassity’s defenses.
A former Sooner is reportedly making the trip up I-35 with Eric Morris.
Oklahoma State is set to hire Julian Wilson as the Cowboys’ defensive backs coach, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Wilson played in 46 games at Oklahoma from 2011 to 2014 before starting his coaching career. He coached under Morris at UNT this past season.
Wilson is an Oklahoma City native and a Southmoore alum.
He has been new OSU defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity’s defensive backs coach since 2022, starting at Abilene Christian before making the move with Cassity to Sam Houston, then to North Texas and now to Stillwater.
The Mean Green has intercepted 13 passes this year (10 of which have come from DBs). That’s tied for 21st nationally.
A big reason the UNT defense has stepped up this season under Cassity has been the Mean Green’s pass defense. In the season before Cassity and Wilson got to Denton, UNT was giving up 265.6 pass yards a game and gave up just 163.2 this season.
Sam Houston’s 2024 defense under Cassity and Wilson finished 13th nationally in pass defensive and brought in 16 INTs, the most in Conference USA.
Wilson made 98 tackles across four seasons as a Sooner to go with 6.5 tackles for loss and four INTs. One of those INTs came against Oklahoma State in 2013. He also took part in the ‘There Goes the Cheetah’ game of 2014.
After trying his hand at pro ball, bouncing around on some NFL practice squads, Wilson took a job as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech in 2020, where he stayed for two seasons before joining up with Cassity at ACU.
