Well, Cowboys’ fans’ nightmares were realized Friday morning.

A source told PFB that Oklahoma State starting quarterback Hauss Hejny’s surgery was scheduled to begin around noon on Friday following a first-quarter injury in the 27-7 win over UT Martin.

CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer reported that the injury was a broken bone in his foot. Hejny is expected to miss a significant period of time.

OSU coach Mike Gundy released a statement Friday on Hejny.

“We’re proud of the way Hauss played last night and wish him a full and speedy recovery,” Gundy said. “I’m thankful for our medical staff and their ability to provide prompt, top-tier care for our team.”

A transfer from TCU, Hejny led the Cowboys on two straight touchdown drives to start Thursday’s game but headed to the locker room after his third series and didn’t return.

He finished the game 5-for-10 with 96 passing yards and a touchdown to go with 27 rushing yards and another score.

His rushing score came first, a 6-yard run where Hejny showcased that speed we’ve been hearing about by beating the Skyhawk defense to the edge and darting into the end zone.

Hejny’s touchdown pass came on a short completion to Gavin Freeman, who took it 10 yards to paydirt.

Hejny was the No. 12 quarterback in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports. He signed with TCU over offers from OSU, Duke, Baylor, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Houston and others.

He redshirted with the Horned Frogs last season while playing in four games. Although he didn’t throw a pass in a game at TCU, he did run 65 yards.

Hejny transferred to OSU this offseason and competed alongside Zane Flores, Garret Rangel and Maealiuaki Smith in the spring. Rangel and Smith transferred out after the spring, and Hejny was named the starter earlier this week.

So, now the OSU offense is in the hands of Flores, a redshirt freshman. Flores played the rest of OSU’s win against the Skyhawks, throwing for 136 yards while running for eight (a number that would’ve been higher had he not been sacked twice).

Out of Gretna, Nebraska, Flores signed with the Cowboys in the 2023 recruiting class but hadn’t played in a college game until Thursday night. He likely would’ve played last season, but a lower body injury ended his year prematurely.
