Report: Oklahoma State Quarterback Nyc Burns to Transfer

True freshmen signal-caller Nyc Burns, a preferred walk-on who was part of Oklahoma State’s 2016 recruiting class, has decided to transfer according to a report from the Tulsa World’s Bill Haisten.

Burns is a 6-foot-5, 190-pound quarterback from Berryhill High School in Tulsa, Okla., who originally turned down multiple scholarship offers for a chance to play at Oklahoma State. Here is what Burns said in a statement to the Tulsa World:

I’m thankful for the opportunity that OSU gave me. Coach Mike Gundy and Coach Yurcich are top-notch and I’ve learned a lot from them. Not being a scholarship guy is an uphill battle every single day.

I know life isn’t fair but I’m looking for a better opportunity to play and be on scholarship. This was a tough decision for me to make, but it comes down to finances. I don’t want to be saddled with student loans when it’s not necessary. I’ll forever be a Cowboy, but I need to be smart about my future.

Burns originally committed to Oklahoma State in 2015 when the Cowboys also had Nick Starkel on the commitment list. Between the two, Burns had a more impressive statistical resume, completing 209 of 326 passes in his senior season to go with 2,837 yards and 35 touchdowns. He was a dynamic runner for Berryhill, too, adding 706 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground according to statistics from his 247sports profile.

The quarterback group is a full room as is, with junior quarterback Mason Rudolph entrenched as the starter, walk-on Taylor Cornelius cemented as the backup, and 2016 scholarship signee Keondre Wudtee redshirting. The Cowboys are also bringing in 2017 quarterback Jelani Woods of Ellenwood, Georgia, who will enroll for the spring semester.

Burns certainly has the physical tools — both as a runner and a passer — to make an impact at the Div. I level. But it’s not the competition that is making the decision for him, it’s the financial situation. He is a smart, heady football player who also has his head on right about a tough situation, knowing he could (and will) have other opportunities elsewhere. Props to Nyc for making a tough decision — no doubt he has a very successful football career ahead of him.
