With Oklahoma State’s coaching change, Cowboys have a 30-day window to hit the portal, and a few are taking the NCAA up on that offer.

OSU safety Dylan Smith is expected to enter the portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. A 6-foot, 190-pound true junior, Smith has started all of the Cowboys’ games this season and has really been a key part of OSU’s defense since stepping on campus.

The younger brother of OSU corner Cam Smith, Dylan played in 10 games as a true freshman in the Cowboys’ 2023 season, making one start. He then started in all 11 games he played in during the 2024 season.

Smith had made 75 tackles through 25 games in an OSU uniform, including three tackles for loss. He’s picked off two passes, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. One of those interceptions came in the final Bedlam of 2023 to help the Cowboys secure the big win.

Being that he hasn’t taken a redshirt, Smith can elect to redshirt this season to save his year since he and the Cowboys have played only four games. It’s a less-than-ideal circumstance, but it’s also understandable considering all the change that’s gone on at the top of the program with Mike Gundy’s firing last week and Todd Grantham’s firing on Sunday.

Smith wasn’t the first Cowboy to hit the portal, though. Long snapper Shea Freibaum announced Sunday that he will also test the transfer waters.

One of the premier long snappers in the country, Freibaum is also a true junior. He has played in all of the Cowboys’ games since 2023.

The Cowboys have two other long snappers on the roster in redshirt senior Aidan Davenport and true freshman Jaxson Duffield. According to PFF, Davenport has played one snap this season. He had one snap last season with the Cowboys after transferring from Bucknell.
