RESULTS: Over 90 Percent Think Rudolph is Better Pro Prospect Than Mayfield

More surprising than the actual results of this poll is how many people voted in it. I’m with you guys, I don’t really think this is a question. I’m not alone either. The guys at Pro Football Focus do a good job of bridging the gap between the college and pro ranks. Here’s what they said about Rudolph the other day.

It’s a similar story for Oklahoma State as the passing offense features a number of talented receivers while QB Mason Rudolph didn’t get the attention he deserves after finishing with the fifth-best passing grade in the nation last season. Another strong year could have Rudolph knocking the door down at the Heisman ceremony while also putting himself into first-round consideration in the draft.

My knees. They’re weak. Anyway, here are the poll results with some of your commentary below.

Swaggypaw: Rudolph, and it’s no contest. Taller, stronger arm, heavier. Runs a more traditional pro style offense. Steadier demeanor (it makes a difference, particularly in the pros where the rah rah only gets you so far). Not to say Mayfield couldn’t end up being a Drew Brees/Russell Wilson type, but on pure potential, it’s Rudolph.

Big D: Rudolph has prototypical size and attributes. However, Mayfield isn’t 5’10, he’s 6’1. That’s short for an NFL qb, but not too short. More like RG3 than Drew Brees on the height scale. So I can understand why they are projecting Mayfield higher since he’s been better in college. His height isn’t as big a minus as its being made out to be.

However, scouts really don’t care who was good in college. They look at prospects like pieces of meat…specimens. Rudolph will be a big hit with the scouts but theres another caveat: coaches don’t care what scouts think. They just want dudes they know can play. So a lot of times a team will grab a guy based on scouts raving but other times the coach is in love with a guy and that’s who they take. Neither proves who will have the better career. Just more than one way of looking at it.

Justin Freeman: Mason is still immature and makes young guy mistakes, but is a more polished thrower. Baker is going to have to rework mechanics.
