Rickie Fowler Wins Rocket Mortgage Classic, Claiming First Win Since 2019
Rickie’s last tour win was in 2019.
Rickie Fowler is a champion again.
Fowler won the Rocket Mortgage Class on Sunday, claiming his first PGA Tour win since 2019. He shot a 24-under 264, but it took some extra golf in a playoff among Fowler, Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin to secure Fowler’s sixth tour title.
Fowler shot in the 60s all weekend at the Detroit Golf Club, shooting a weekend-best 64 on Saturday to head into Sunday’s final round.
Some have pinned a reputation on Fowler’s Sundays, but he delivered with a clutch pair of birdies to claim his first trophy since the 2019 WM Phoenix Open. First came his birdie on 18 to get into the playoff. Then he did it again on the first playoff hole to win the tournament.
This wasn’t out of the blue, either. Fowler has had his downs in the past four years, but in his past five tournaments, Fowler has finished inside the Top 15 each time, including a T5 finish at the U.S. Open.
“It’s hard to really put it all into words,” Fowler said. “Obviously a lot of good stuff this year and been playing some really good golf, so I knew it was just a matter of time with how I’ve been playing. I’ve had a couple tough weekends where I had a chance. Winning is great but there is a lot more to life than that.”
Along with the sweet taste of victory at long last, Fowler will also take home a winner’s cut of $1,584,000.
Fowler wasn’t the only former Cowboy golfer to lift a trophy Sunday either. Talor Gooch won on the LIV Tour over Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, as Gooch claimed his third LIV title and $4 million.
