Former Oklahoma State star Russell Okung is on the mend after a serious medical scare that occurred last month.

During a June 1 practice, Okung says he experienced unusual chest pain and went to urgent care out of an abundance of caution only to find out the decision may have saved his life. Okung suffered a pulmonary embolism caused by blood clots, but early detection, he says, may have prevented something much worse from happening. A pulmonary embolism is when an artery in the lungs becomes blocked by a blood clot.

“When detected early, this condition is very treatable and I’m grateful to have access to the best available care as I continue on the path to full recovery,” Okung said Thursday in a statement. “I’m very grateful to my teammates, coaches and the entire Chargers organization for their care, support and understanding during this challenging situation. Thanks to an incredible medical team and a very supportive family, I hope to be back on the field as quickly as possible.”

Okung, now with the Los Angeles Chargers, was placed on the active, non-football injury list. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out, but the team’s GM said this week that his availability for training camp and potentially part of the regular season remains up in the air.

Earning a spot on the 53-man roster is hardly priority No. 1 when you have a near-death experience, but Okung seems to be in good spirits and he says he’s feeling “great physically.”

“As soon as doctors clear me,” he said, “my plans include blocking #17’s blind side all the way to Miami.”
