Sam Houston Transfer Guard Jacob Walker Commits to Oklahoma State

Jacob Walker was the Conference-USA Sixth Man of the Year and earned a spot on the league’s All-Freshman Team. Come next season, he’ll be a Cowboy.

Walker announced his commitment to Oklahoma State on Monday by way of a transfer from Sam Houston. Sam Kayser first reported the news. He averaged 11.5 points, 2.2 boards and 2.5 assists a game as a freshman for the Bearkats while shooting 36% from 3.

“Jacob is a dynamic guard who plays with pace, toughness and confidence,” Steve Lutz said in OSU’s release. “He has a natural ability to put pressure on the rim, and that shows up in how often he gets to the free throw line. We love his competitiveness, his scoring instincts and the way he finished the season. He’s a guy who can impact winning in a lot of different ways, and we’re excited to add him to our backcourt.”

Listed at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, Walker hails from Memphis, Tennessee. He won a pair of state titles at First Assembly Christian High School before spending his senior year at Sunrise Christian in Kansas, the same program OSU landed Mekhi Ragland from. Walker was an unranked prospect coming out of high school before immediately making an impact with Sam Houston.

He scored in double figures in 19 of the 34 games he played in this past season, including six outings in the 20s. He and the Bearkats played in Gallagher-Iba Arena back in December, where Walker tallied 17 points while shooting 3-for-6 from 3.

Walker has a knack for drawing fouls, leading Sam Houston in free-throw attempts with 159, where he shot 75%. His free-throw rate ranks in the top 80 nationally, according to KenPom, while Walker finished in the top 220 in fouls drawn per 40 minutes.

Walker is commitment No. 3 and the second Sam Houston transfer to make the trip up to Stillwater. He joins Conference-USA Defensive Player of the Year Kashie Natt as Bearkats turned Pokes. North Carolina transfer Luka Bogavac joins those two.
