Series History: OSU Has Beaten Texas Just Once in Stillwater Since 1997

Oklahoma State and No. 6 (!) Texas clash this weekend in Stillwater, where OSU has struggled against the Horns in recent years. Since 1997 Oklahoma State has only beaten Texas in Stillwater one time. That was in 2016 when the Pokes nearly hung 50 on them in a rout.

Here’s a look at the series by the numbers.

• Overall series: Texas leads 24-8
• Under Gundy: Texas leads 7-6
• Longest streak: Texas — 12 games (1998-2009)
• Biggest rout (Texas 71-14 in 1996)

Holy crap, Texas beat OSU 71-14 in 1996? I had to go look up that box score and oh my gosh it’s even worse than I imagined it was going to be! ?

Ricky Williams averaged 12 a pop and had 3 total TDs, while the rest of Texas’ team (littered with pros at RB by the way!) added another 5 rushing TDs.

OSU passed for 79 yards that game but was actually pretty decent rushing the ball. Here’s a look at the full box score in which OSU had … the same number of first downs as they did two weeks ago at Kansas State.

I always enjoy the trip down memory lane these posts provide, even the nightmarish memory lanes, and this was a fun one (“fun”). OSU passed the ball 283 times that year, while David Thompson rushed it 293 times by himself. To put those numbers in perspective, OSU has passed it 232 times so far this season, and Justice Hill has just 112 carries.

Times have changed (thankfully) and mostly for the better for these Pokes. Hopefully for them they can get just their second victory in Stillwater since the year after that 1996 game in 1997 when they delivered the biggest thumping (42-16) Texas has ever taken at the hands of the orange and black.
