Spencer Sanders Named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year
Spencer Sanders, Oklahoma State’s potential quarterback of the future, has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Texas.
Fresh off of a 7-TD and nearly 500-yard performance in Denton Ryan’s win over Lubbock Coronado, Sanders was announced as the winner on Monday and is now a nominee for Gatorade’s National Player of the Year award.
“Spencer Sanders is just a special player, there’s no other way to describe him,” said Denton High head coach Billy Miller in a statement. “He throws the ball better than just about anyone I’ve ever been around, and you can’t tackle him when he runs it. He also shows great leadership, great knowledge of the game … every intangible you can think of.”
Sanders has thrown for 3,621 yards and 51 touchdowns with just six interceptions and is completing 66.7 percent of his passes. Add in his 1,220 yards and 14 scores on the ground and it’s easy to see why many are pegging Sanders as a candidate for reps as early as next season.
I am more than honored and blessed to receive this award ? ??? https://t.co/TV39N2XjAQ

The Cowboys lose the OSU all-everything leader Mason Rudolph after this season and there are several candidates to compete for the role as his replacement. But Sanders has as much upside as any incoming QB since, well, Mason Rudolph.
Denton Ryan is 14-0 thanks to Sander’s dual-threat heroics and faces Highland Park on Friday night in the Texas Class 5A Division I semifinals.
